Caught in the Crossfire

Caught in the Crossfire

Last year the United Mileage Plus auctions got off to a rousing start with members bidding miles on a variety of cars, vacations, and experiences. It appears this year the auctions are still going and going and going.

Through these auctions, United Mileage Plus members can choose to spend miles for items/services that aren’t normally part of a frequent flyer redemption chart. For example, some lucky member will enjoy the opportunity to drive a stock car on a real NASCAR race track (currently bidding at 35,000 miles), while another will be relegated to driving on “regular” roads, but in their very own Chrysler Crossfire Roadster.

Bidding on the Crossfire ends Oct. 8, and if past auctions are any indication this particular item isn’t going to go cheap. In previous auctions, these same cars have gone for in excess of 1.4 million miles (equal to the sign-up bonus for 70 new Chase Mileage Plus credit cards). But if you got ’em, use ’em.

Now, if you are a few miles short of a Crossfire there are some other items that might still catch your fancy. We noticed that a Thai food cooking party for 20 in Atlanta was going for only 8,000 miles, while a Tuscan cooking class for eight in Washington D.C. was going for 76,000 miles.

Is Italian food really that much more popular than Thai?
