American Express has announced that as of May 1, 2014, they will be eliminating the foreign transaction fees on Delta SkyMiles credit cards. This will save cardmembers a 2.7 percent foreign transaction fee when using the card for purchases overseas. Another change for the card is that it will now be a chip and signature card (not as good as a chip and PIN card for travel, but a step in the right direction). The bad news is that the Platinum card’s annual fee is increasing to $195 from $150 on May 1. The Gold and Reserve cards will remain the same at $95 and $450, respectively. Bottom line: Other co-brand FFP cards waived the foreign transaction fee years ago so AMEX is playing catch up with these cards. If you spend $25,000 or more in a calendar year on these cards, Delta SkyMiles will drop the new revenue requirement to earn elite status.
