Earn 20 AAdvantage Miles For Every Dollar Donated For Breast Cancer Research — Plus More Initiatives

Earn 20 AAdvantage miles for every dollar donated for breast cancer research via Susan G. Komen through the Miles for the Cure program — which raises funds to support breast cancer research — from American Airlines as part of the annual Be Pink campaign through Monday, October 31, 2016.

The minimum donation is $25.00; and you can earn up to maximum of 600,000 AAdvantage miles during a period of twelve months.

“This year, Komen is setting a bold goal to reduce breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in 10 years by, among other things, enhancing their focus on research to cure these forms of breast cancer and metastatic disease”, according to the content posted on the official Internet web site of American Airlines Giving for this year. “Finding a cure for breast cancer is especially important to us. Each year, more American employees are affected by breast cancer than any other cancer. As the most common form of cancer among women, it is estimated that nearly a quarter of a million people will be diagnosed with it in 2016.”

Since its partnership with Susan G. Komen began in 1983, American Airlines — which is the first-ever Lifetime Promise Partner of Susan G. Komen — has helped to raise greater than $33 million.

Other Initiatives to Fight Breast Cancer

In addition to earning AAdvantage miles simply by donating funds, there are six other initiatives — many of which you can participate.

  • Purchase From the Menu During Flight With your purchase of Project 7 Gourmet Gummies Grapefruit Melon, two dollars of each sale — up to a maximum of $40,000.00 — is donated in support of breast cancer research and the commitment funding of the Susan G. Komen Young Investigators Grant Program by American Airlines
  • Drink Pink This month, American Airlines offers pink Dasani sparkling water and raspberry lemonade as one of the complimentary beverages during flight
  • Visit the Admirals Club In select Admirals Club locations, the purchase of certain pink menu items will result in a donation of 20 percent
  • Log On to Wi-Fi in the Sky Gogo — the supplier of Wi-Fi for American Airlines — turns the logon page pink throughout the month of October; and their support helps spread awareness of the collaborative fight against breast cancer.
  • Participate in Be Pink Day on October 13, 2016 Employees of American Airlines will don pink uniform items and accessories throughout the month of October — but especially on October 13, 2016, which is worldwide Be Pink day at American Airlines — and you can join in by wearing or sporting pink yourself on that day
  • Tito’s Handmade Vodka In support of the employees of American Airlines and the 2016 Be Pink campaign, Tito’s Handmade Vodka has made a generous donation of $10,000.00 to the Susan G. Komen Young Investigator Grant Program

Through the official Internet website of Susan G. Komen, you can also find out about events — such as the American Airlines Celebrity Golf and Tennis Weekend, which is scheduled for Thursday, October 6, 2016 through Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Park Hyatt Resort Aviara and the Del Mar Country Club in southern California.

The Story of Maureen Smith

Women who are diagnosed early with breast cancer have a survival rate of 99 percent — but even when detection is delayed, there is still hope.

Maureen Smith — who is a customer service agent with American Airlines at Philadelphia International Airport — was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. Extensive chemotherapy and radiation therapies initially seemed to improve her condition; but her cancer metastasized into her spine and liver in 2004. With the support of her friends and family, she underwent chemotherapy and radiation a second time.

“I am always happy to talk about my journey so women know that even if your cancer has metastasized, you can still go on living a normal and happy life,” Maureen said. She still receives weekly treatments; but she has a positive prognosis and outlook. “I can happily say that I have not had a reoccurrence in 12 years.”
