Reuters reports that American Airlines is in advance talks with China Eastern to bring it into the oneworld alliance. American is also in talks with a Brazilian carrier to join oneworld–most likely GOL, which entered a codesharing agreement with American Airlines last year. GOL is currently not part of an alliance while a main rival airline, TAM, is a member of the Star Alliance. Reuters also reports that American had merger talks with US Airways and alliance talks with Continental in 2008, just after Delta and Northwest merged, but those talks ended as Continental chose to pursue an alliance with United.
