Passengers complained of long lines at Pearson International Airport Thursday because of a protest by security guards.

Some passengers said it was complete chaos at the airport, as they experienced delays for several hours.

Bassem Handy, a passenger who was on a flight from San Francisco to Toronto, said he and other passengers waited on the airport tarmac for 45 minutes. He said no announcement was made explaining the delays. When he called Air Canada’s concierge service, the airline said airport security is on a work-to-rule.

“As a result of a work and labour issue with CATSA guards today, pre-board screening is very slow this evening. We do expect some delays for passengers travelling out of Toronto Pearson,” a spokesperson for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority said in a recorded message.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority or CATSA is responsible for passenger screening at airports across the country.

If you were delayed at Pearson International Airport send your photos to webmaster@thestar.ca

I thought taking long time to go through YYZ security was normal, no matter with the protest or not.

Two weeks ago, I went through the international to domestic connection security at T1 (flying ABE-YYZ-YUL) and it was a zoo. There was no obvious reason for a delay except that the sizeable number of people staffing each of the two stations seemed to be more intent on their conversations with each other than on actually processing passengers through the queue. They were having a party; the rest of us could only watch. :(

Question: how many CATSA people does it take to change a lightbulb?

Answer: None - they are all too dumb - no matter how many you have at it - they still will not figure it out!

Disagree - they took the job - so do it - plain and simple ... do not hide behind the wage issue ... if you do not like it - quit!

All I am saying is that function is too important to be given to minimum wages.....after all this is not a fast food job. :p

I agree. Minimum wage will only attract people who have no other prospects. It can't be a particuarly attractive job intrinsically, even setting aside the question of the pay scale. Except possibly for people who get a thrill from wearing a security uniform, who are probably not the sort you actually want to hire. If you want good people, make the position attractive to good people. If you don't care about quality people, then do it on the cheap and live with the results. Trouble is, the flying public are the ones who endure the results.

Page 20 of the Cdn Airport Workers Union lists the wage rates for all Security screeners. Wages are between $15.60 and $21.20 per hour. Good wage levels for the type of work being delivered. There is also a "Volume Risk Stress Consequences" payout of about 3k per annum. Plus the workers get benefit package.

Wages and benefits don't seem to be an issue.

Full contract is located here: http://www.cawu.ca/Newsletter/CAWU Collective Agreement.pdf

I don't mean to pile on here, but I guess I am.

CATSA, whether trans-border or domestic Canadian travel, is horrible. Their set-up and staffing leaves a lot to be desired. At least with the TSA, when someone alarms, it's someone else's job to resolve the alarm. Whereas with CATSA, it's the person manning the magnetometer that resolves it. In other words, the line stops until the alarm is resolved.

The set-ups of short tables leading to the mouth of the x-ray machine are miserable too.

And checking boarding passes five times going into US Pre-clearance before you even put your stuff into the x-ray machine is useless.

    And get off my lawn.

Well, sort of wages if shifts and shift pay are based on lowest bidder process.
