I hope they don't fill those beer glasses too much as the "crying in the beer" event will be in full modus operandi.:D

    rawr!

Its been a habit, from whence g-h-t was organizing onwards --- when's canucklehead in town?.....yeah, not that week! :p:D

but to those who make it, enjoy the crisp cool Toronto fall! (it was great to see the foliage change from atop the PH and other buildings in Toronto when I was there - Central Park in NYC is starting to look nice from my building, hopefully it lasts a little bit longet)

Maybe it's time to hold a DO at YQU. (YQ where? Oh, no, don't ask, nobody can spell the town's name correctly anyway)

    Okay, time to confess!

As most of you would by now know, I spend most of my airborne time aboard Dashes. Usually it's the Dash 8-300, which said Little Airplane That Could is (next to the Twin Otters of Harbour Air) my favourite ride.

Mind'ee, not my favourite ride because of the skimpy size, the dour hardness of its seats, nor on account of its very loud bug-smashers whirling away at head-level, but because of the double row of front starboard seats, the 'Passion Pit' where one grandmother and three happy, well-paid, frequent-flyer oil-riggers get to ride back and forth.

I've lost track of how many segments it's been this year. Let's guesstimate and say 'one metric zillion'. Coming in and out of YCD and YQU, I find myself seated in the Passion Pit about two-thirds of the time. The other third of the time, I'm still burrowed into my customary perch in Seat 1-Delta, but there's no facing Row Thirteen and, hence, no Passion Pit.

Why do I mention all of this? Well, it's because the Passion Pit provides the in-flight entertainment. I know way more about how NOT to drill an oil well, from the beer-fuelled stories of my oil-rigger pit-mates, than I'd ever learn in a month of watching oil rigs with binoculars from outside their safety-fences.

In mentioning the prospect of a DO in YQU, I failed to grasp the possibility of an even more exclusive DO: to wit, an air-borne jokefest on the network's shortest scheduled flight: the little wee hop over the Salish Sea between YVR and YCD. Something like 11 minutes airborne, 16 minutes bank-to-bank.

Who else here ever takes that hop? (mumble mumble only 250-mile minimum upcoming mumble mumble).

I've done both hops - albeit not lately.

Surely from time to time the passion pit on those flights contains people who make pulp for a living - something else to learn about.

I've never yet met a Pulpie in the passion-pit, even though the YCD run makes its approach line-up by flying over the Kamyr tower at the Harmac pulp-mill.

**Did** meet a corrosion engineer once, though. Made me appreciate stainless steel all the more. "Stress-cracking is not your friend," she muttered darkly.

When I was in the contracting business and building all the CTMP plants in eastern Canada we loved stainless. Lots more money to weld than carbon steel. ;)

LOL, as it turns out, I was there a week early, and now a week later. A last minute rush to get a new passport due to me not being able to add and subtract and now realizing my passport expires in 5.5month before my RTW travels (and not 6.5mo as I originally thought).
