WTH? UA Applied SWU to Different Flight in Itinerary

    Was doing a same-day mileage run (all UA metal, booked on UA.com):
    CLE-IAD-SEA-IAD-CLE

    Had a friend apply a short expiry SWU to the SEA-IAD flight.
    My itinerary correctly showed that flight as Waitlisted.

    Was "taking my chances" for a UDU for the outbound (IAD-SEA) flight.
    IAD-SEA flight clears at the normal 1K upgrade window.

    SEA-IAD does not clear and I fly in Y.
    One pax cleared F waitlist at the gate...I ended up being #1 on the upgrade list.

    Friend's account shows SWU applied to my outbound flight.

    FWIW, I did have trouble at check-in for the outbound.
    Called and tech support had to check me in.......

    Does United arbitrarily just do this?
    Do I have any recourse?
    (Looking for advice before calling 1K line.)

    I had SWU/CR-1 Sponsored Travel at the beginning of December -- I think it'll be a tough sell to get any compensation because you got an upgrade on the outbound -- unless you can show you were definitely going to receive the UDU, but they mistakenly applied the SWU. Always worth trying though....maybe ask for 17,500 miles so you can upgrade a different flight?

    I sent an e-mail asking for the return of the SWU or similar compensation for "....the unauthorized modifcation of my reservation."

    We'll see what happens.

    I do show a Systemwide Upgrade was pulled from xxxxxxx account for your departure flight. I have made an exception and re-deposited the upgrade back into xxxx account for the confusion that occurred. It is updated now and it expires January 31, 2012.
