    Becoming a Delta convert here.

Am in London, Mrs G.E. is in NY, heavily pregnant. I just got the call this morning to fly to NY... "NOW" !!!

I've never redeemed an award flight on Delta. Just for kicks, I checked availability for award flights, and what do you know: 100k return biz class LHR->JFK, with an initial departure leg just a few hours after I book. Wow. These boards set my expectations awfully low on redemption availability on Delta... yet they're totally coming through precisely when I need them.

    I'm impressed!

That's good to hear as someone who might switch to DL next year.

Last minute awards are DL's great strength. Out of curiosity, what sort of "International Origination Surcharge" did they hit you with for starting at LHR?

Total taxes were $619. That's a little uglier... But still I guess I was gonna have to pay something there anyhow.

A lot of this is the exUK luxury tax imposed on passengers in business and FC cabins.

Yes, it's a rip off. When I've been on M fares and upgraded at the airport (LGW, LHR), I've had to pay this...it was 40-50 GBP the last time I paid at the airport. I think it has gone up since then.

Doing a mock booking for Y on LHR-JFK, there's a £175 (I think the currency is right on that...DL.dumb is quoting the total in GBP and not indicating it on the line items) International Surcharge that's applied, which is not imposed by HMRC, so there's still a substantial. I believe if one does a revenue booking and gets the taxes/fees broken out, that should agree with the YQ built into the fare.

Especially considering the lack of "last minute" fees even for non-elites.

I believe it is a lot cheaper MAN-JFK, due to the steep London taxes.

you too huh? I've noticed how delta really undercuts UA on a lot of fares. Especially domestic F. almost 50% lower fares. Has me thinking as well.

Not the fares for me...moving this year to BOS and because I fly to SLC twice a year and do all my mileage earning on my own dime...its hard to pass up 2 almost transcons in terms of mileage towards status...and DL has a nice focus city operation and very nice terminal at BOS.

I am thinking of making the switch too...From UA/CO.

Will retain at least 1P on UA, but it would be nice to have choices...

    Great news.

DL's slogan used to include, "Delta gets you there..." Seems that's still true.

Good thing you weren't in NY and your wife was in Paris. You might have gotten an award ticket for next february...if lucky. You got lucky on award space ...

Did you try to use your AA points on BA? They have, IMHO, the best lhr-JFK availability ... In all 4 cabins.

I did that the previous week- cashed in 62.5k AA miles on a one way LHR->JFK award in the BA First Class cabin...

Seriously, DL availability at the last minute can get much better. It seems that if they think seats will otherwise go to nonrevs, they're willing to let us redeem at low if one can go without much time for advanced planning. For some people and some situations, this can work well.

Nice...one of the easiest redemptions out there ... If you don't mind the co-pay!

More importantly, any news about the baby?

Maybe the big co-pay, including the LHR luxury taxes, helps to make availability greater for such award tickets.

Nah, it just keeps AF happy by making sure there's no added incentive for their passengers to credit to SkyMiles instead of FlyingBlue. If you check, the IOS is basically only applied to ex-EU redemptions to alight with FB.

Thanks all for the kind sentiments. Turned out to be a false alert, followed by more false alerts, and more than a week later and still no baby! Big surprise to us, because we've done this a few times before (this is number 4 child). After 4 we figured that any early signs would mean its coming on FAST... still waiting...
