Great article! A bit split on whether to take AA's or the passengers' side on this though...

I wonder if Michael Dell is still using his pass... I'd be willing to legally change my name to take his over ;)

I wonder if the passes had restrictions to AA metal, or if code shares were/are also allowed.

IIRC, they were only AA metal. I had an AAirpass during the early 1980's and loved it! IIRC, there may have been some early lifetime passes that did include codeshares, but I am not sure fo taht. I almost bought a lifetime pass myself, but I had my own airplane at the time so I was using it more than I was using the AAirpass. Silly decision on my part, I should have bought it!

Next court date is June 4. By then AA may move case to Bankruptcy Court. That doesn't end matter as if AA is held to have wrongfully terminated, Rothstein may be entitled to substantial damages. Rothstein took advantage of AA for sure BUT it set the terms and left out protections. Had it policed the travel, it would of discovered situation earlier and been able to warn Rothstein or go to court seeking an interpretation. I believe AA's unilateral cancellation is questionable. I lack sufficient facts to label it as wrong..

On the surface I agree with youKyRoamer. However, I have only the reporting to go on so I'm missing nearly all the actual facts.

Looks like some really questionable activities on the part of some pass holders. Whether or not those activities were contrary to the rules of the pass, and thus whether or not AA was justified in its actions, is not something I have any knowledge of and I suppose will either eventually be up to the courts to decide or will never be answered because of the legal expense and complications of bankruptcy. Regardless sounds like some folks had a great run, I'm kinda jealous, and that at least one person may have gotten back a good portion of the cost of the pass by selling flights to companions ;) independent of how much they flew themselves :p

From my perspective even if the fine print did not prohibit that practice it was unquestionably opposed to the intent of the proposition. But then I'm a moralist and quite morally conservative, with many people thinking "anything goes".:(

As the passes accrued miles, there would be no shortage of chances to use partner metal as well, just somewhat more limited availability.
