No, I wouldn't pay both miles and cash.

Yes. The $450 is because you have a cheap ticket. However, I probably wouldn't fly UA.

    Depends on the flight,

I paid 25k plus $500.00 MAD to ORD, on AA

Sometimes.we upgrade to get the best route, seems with miles you do't always get the best times and routes,

2 or 3 bad sleep days, I can understand that also, been put here, done that....also helps to spend last night a hotel near the airport,

UA good airline, like AA better..

If I had both an abundance of miles and the $ wasn't a problem, yes.

How about 175,000 miles for one way Business class ticket on UA from IAD to DEL.

We turned offer to upgrade CDG-SFO for $550 plus miles as we were already in econ plus exit row seats and there were two of us (and those miles are taking us back to LHR now)

Last year I redeemed 150,000 for a C ticket to do JFK- p.s -> LAX - B787 -> PVG one-way on UA. I will be doing something like it again this year but trying out the new B787 service to CTU.

...and I did cough up 25K RDMs and $500 before to upgrade a 10-hr flight. I did not mind using the RDMs but I thought it was a terrible use of cash on top of the price of the Y ticket...

In December, I was able to upgrade from coach to business on AA from MIA to MAD for 15k miles. I don't recall a cash payment in excess of ~$50. A nice product, and the mostly Hispanic crew from MIA were top-notch.

First answer = no. Have turned down similar "opportunities" to upgrade on United from Europe to US. Second answer = upon reconsideration, if I hadn't slept for 2-3 days: why not just do it and enjoy the better seating and service to make this long-haul flight tolerable?

And I never would. I think the price is too steep compared to the value. I value my points and cash higher than that as a general rule. Then again, I've also generally purchased the underlying fare, so it isn't just the upgrade I'm paying for but the whole thing.

I agree. Sometimes it is mixed cabin. Half way is Business and half is Coach! Still 175,000 miles.

I would never pay it unless I could afford it.

FC. Domestic is not worth it on a 3 hour ride,

International J or FC makes a real difference, and is always worthy he price, if you have the price...it is a long ride in the rear,,,,on a full flight...

    Not to me.

Yes, the international product is much different up front than in the back, but not enough to justify that price from my personal travel budget.

To each his own, and I do understand how you feel.

I am 72, and have an elevated tax bracket, to the best of my knowledge I will not take it with me.

My wife and I have no debt.

I tend to agree in WA - not even necessarily in that saving the money is a better choice, but I can get much greater enjoyment from spending the copay on better food/drinks personally (or another trip). But of course, your own preferences will vary.

I could argue most of the positions in this thread. For me, being about 2 years behind on sleep after raising kids the last 8 years, I value sleep ahead of really good champagne on most flights. That's saying a lot. ;)

Comfort=sleep for me. Don't sleep well in a coach seat.

Under these circumstances I would consider it.
Having taken a 10 hour flight in these type of seats (EWR-HNL) I found it made a big difference after the flight. If I wasn't sleep deprived or needing to be wide awake I would not.

Thanks everyone. Was traveling to asia again. To clarify i am 1K on united and i think its business product is very good ( but first not so good since no difference. In my opinion) and i was traveling for work without upgradable ticket ( sometimes i can buy upgradable ticket if its <$250). I do agree that if i had paid for ticket myself then i woupd be very reluctant to pay with miles + $. But in this case i felt it was worth it.

I'm a bit late to the party but I wouldn't pay for United Business Class besides usage of Global Premier Upgrade instruments.
