I was in the *A lounge in ICN waiting for my connecting OZ flight back to HNL from TPE. I had a 3 hour layover. My flight was scheduled to take off at 8:00 pm and boarding started at 7:15 pm or so. Anyway, while I was sitting there, an OZ agent approached me and asked it I was flying to HNL. At my confirmation, she told me that I was late for boarding. I looked at my phone (still on airplane mode) and it showed 6:53 pm. I showed it to her and she told me it was actually 7:53 pm. Yikes!!! She got on her walkie talkie and escorted me down toward the gate (thank god it was just down the stairs and around the corner) and another gate agent escorted me the rest of the way. I boarded the plane and sat down at 7:58 pm. The plane doors closed and started moving within the next few of minutes.

I'm still not sure what happened with my time but I was so lucky! Not sure if it made any difference but I was in Business class. This would have never happened if I was flying on an US airlines or probably any other western airline - I would have just missed my flight.

The thing is, I had seen an agent walking through the lounge a little earlier but couldn't understand what she was saying so had just not paid any more attention.

You are right this wouldn't happen in US ever. Actually 8 years back in I was in hkg waiting for flight to ICN and sitting next to gate on my laptop and didn't pay attention they started boarding early and by the time I realized they were pulling my bag of the plane. Had to stay there for another 10 hrs

I think your phone was still on Taipei time, which is one hour earlier than Tokyo time. Since you were still on airplane mode I guess it didn't update itself to local time. A good lesson for us all!

I am always amused at how gate agents in Asia go out and round up stragglers. Or you hear pages such as "Last remaining passenger, Mr. Simon Lee, please go to gate 29 for immediate departure." That would never happen in the U.S.! In fact, U.S. Airways in Charlotte left behind my 90 year old hard of hearing mother sitting in the gate area when she didn't hear the departure announcements. No one even bothered.

Mrs Sweet Willie & I were on Thai Airways flight from LAX-KIX years back, we arrived at LAX ~2.5 hours before our flight, and there are no customers in line & a single agent starting to roll up the ropes that keep pax in line. She noticed our bewildered look and asked what flight we were on, upon us showing her our itin, she immediately got on a radio informing the gate she had two pax, she then led us to the head of security, helped rush us through & onto the gate then plane.

Apparently there had been a schedule change and the flight had been moved up ~2 hours but Thai had never communicated that to me. Lesson learned there for me, that I take it as my responsibility to recheck departure times prior to day of departure.

So good things do happen in the US (granted this was an Asian airline:))

Interestingly enough, I was supposed to be on my US flight today, and I missed it since I'm sitting in United Club in JFK. Now I have to wait for the next flight out, if I'm lucky at all.. All flights are oversold for the next several days...

This is why I don't let my iPhone update automatically. I manually pick the appropriate time zone when I board a flight, just as I would adjust my wristwatch.

you all keep saying that this wouldn't happen in the US, but it's happened to me multiple times, including when I was an occasional flyer.

I would not rely on such measures anywhere, and I would not rule them out anywhere either.

Unless it doesn't, or picks the wrong time zone. I've had both occur.

I am the complete opposite. I rely on the automated update system of my DROID4 almost religiously, especially during int'l travel. The second safeguard that I have to avoid missing flights is to sign up for automated flight status updates with which ever airline I am flying on (usually UA), to be sent to me both as SMS and email. The phone will play a specific tune and also vibrate when such a message arrives.

Several years ago I was in the NW lounge at IAD. They had a special line that took you from the lounge to the plane. There was no way you could miss that because they had a list of everyone in the lounge, and they would not walk you to the plane until everyone was in line. You are right this would not happen now.

LH makes announcements like that in BOS. Might have been because E Terminal Security was a cluster****.
