This is my first post here on MILEPOINT forum. I have had a Starwood preferred business card for a few months now. Between the sign up bonus and spending, I have enough points to book a week at the Punta Mita resort in Mexico. I just signed up for the Starwood personal card which would give me another 30,000 points. By my best guess, I could "stay" at the local Sheraton category 2 hotel 18 times using cash and points and would attain Platinum status before our stay in Mexico. I have three questions about that.

    1) is it worth is to burn most of my new sign up bonus (18X1600 points) plus $540?
    2) do I actually have to stay or check-in to do this? (half hour away)
    3) should I just do a platinum challenge knowing I won't make it?

We may only get to stay 5-10 more nights over the next year at an SPG property.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Welcome to MilePoint, brucewil! I will let a Starwood expert comment on the value of Platinum status for a one week stay + another 5 to 10 nights, but my instinct would be that it's not worth it. Unless you are able to work something out directly with the hotel for your "phantom" stays, you'll need to go and check in. 18 trips driving 30 minutes away alone would be a deal breaker for me.

Thanks ChrisLacy. I kind of thought the same thing especially since I already have Gold status. I have emailed the property manager at Punta Mita and he already implied an upgrade would be no problem at the time of year (end of Jan). 18 trips is definitely a deal breaker if I actually have to check in.

What about the Platinum challenge? I don't know much about that. Is that for paid only stays? Or are cash and points allowed? How many stays do I need in how much time?

Lastly, if I speed up my spending on my Hilton card, I could probably attain Diamond status with them. Would Starwood match my elite status?

I'm a Hilton person myself and I've never looked into the Platinum challenge with Starwood. I would suggest searching our Starwood Preferred Guest forum: http://milepoint.com/forums/forums/starwood-preferred-guest.158/ using the search box in the upper right. When you search from the SPG forum, the search will default to only searching within that forum. If you aren't able to find the answers through search, I'd suggest opening up a new thread in the SPG forum. You'll probably have better luck getting a SPG expert to answer your question there as I don't think all of our members visit the Newbies forum regularly.

Sorry I couldn't answer your questions...but hopefully this points you in the right direction :)

Upgrades are the greatest benefit of Platinum, that along with the Continental Breakfast amenity for two. Looks like you already have one of them for the trip (potentially), and the other one is definitely not worth 60k Starpoints which are extremely valuable currency and could be an entire extra vacation somewhere really nice.

As I myself has just signed up for the PC, its 18 paid nights in 3 months, C&P do not count.

Thanks everyone for the input. Is it worth trying the platinum challenge just before our stay at Punta Mita even though I would probably not make it? Would I have Platinum status for our stay and then revert back to gold when the challenge is over?

If you complete the PC you'll get it for next year. If you don't get 25stay/50night then you revert back to whatever to gold or regular.

welcome to Milepoint. Absolutely not worth burning the points and moneh unless you have many more stays for the next year. You can get the Amex platinum card which gives you gold SPG status and many other benefits for much less than the spend you proposed. Many hotels will give you upgrades with gold status, although platinum is certainly much better.

Diamond for Hilton is mentioned in post #3. It was a simple mistake.
