Congrats to Melbourne being chosen most liveable city in the world according to the Economist.

In a bizarre assessment, it takes over top spot from Vancouver (which has held the envious position since 2002 but falls to third after Vienna) due to transportation woes in the regional area (faulted for a highway problem on Vancouver Island -- note Vancouver is not located on Vancouver Island, but on the mainland of BC)! The Stanley Cup riot was not part of the determination as it occurred after the analysis was performed.

Australia and Canada dominated the top 10
    • 1. Melbourne, Australia
    • 2. Vienna, Austria
    • 3. Vancouver, Canada
    • 4. Toronto, Canada
    • 5. Calgary, Canada
    • 6. Sydney, Australia
    • 7. Helsinki, Finland
    • 8. Perth, Australia
    • 9. Adelaide, Australia
    • 10. Auckland, New Zealand

I've always enjoyed Melbourne and have probably been there at least ten times over the years. Excellent selection of restaurants including Italian over on Lygon Street, and easy access to the beach in St. Kilda. Pop into one of the bakeries along Acland Street for a pastry and my day is complete there. Also excellent public transportation using a combination of trains and trams.

I've been to every city on the list except Helsinki, though have been to a few cities in Sweden and Copenhagen in Denmark, so have got pretty close.

New Year of rankings came out today -- Melbourne is still on top!

    1. Melbourne, Australia
    • 2. Vienna, Austria
    • 3. Vancouver, Canada
    • 4. Toronto, Canada
    • 5. Calgary, Canada
    • 6. Adelaide, Australia
    • 7. Sydney, Australia
    • 8. Helsinki, Finland
    • 9. Perth, Australia
    • 10. Auckland, New Zealand

    at the bottom

    131. Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
    132. Tehran, Iran
    133. Douala, Cameroon
    134. Tripoli, Libya
    135. Karachi, Pakistan
    136. Algiers, Algeria
    137. Harare, Zimbabwe
    138. Lagos, Nigeria
    139. Port Moresby, PNG
    140. Dhaka, Bangladesh

other notable comments in the report:
'Global business centres tend to be victims of their own success. The “big city buzz” they enjoy
can overstretch infrastructure and cause higher crime rates. New York, London, Paris and Tokyo are
all prestigious hubs with a wealth of recreational activity, but all suffer from higher levels of crime,
congestion and public transport problems than would be deemed comfortable.'

'Elsewhere in the current survey, the impact of civil unrest on the position of cities in the ranking
continues to be felt. In recent surveys, the Arab Spring, civil war in Libya and unrest in Greece and
London had an impact on these cities’ scores.'
