I have been in the habit of withdrawing my CR1's at the 100 hour mark so they are not wasted when I would receive the upgrade under UDU anyway. Under the new system, do I understand correctly that SWU's and CR1's will trump UDU even at the gate? Will the new system not begin until Jan 1? Would you withdraw CR1's for myself and spouse for a flight on Oct 7, 2011?

Under the new system, yes, SWUs, CR1s and miles + copay will trump UDUs, as well as YBM Ups. Then it is categorized by status, fare class, etc - the CO way of processing UDUs. That is supposed to be in effective in 2012 as I understand with the changes to the MP program. (I am sure someone will let know me know if I am off base with my understanding :)).

What route are you flying on October 7? I can see you are a 1K, is your spouse? Are you on the same PNR? It depends on how long the flight is and what the loads look like. Depending on the route and timing, I would pull the CR-1 from my PNR and keep the CR-1 on for your spouse. But without more specifics, hard to say.

You're off base with your understanding :)

    Priority will be:
    Global Services
YBM-Ups (sorted by fare, then status)
SWU/GPU/CR1/RPU/miles+copay (sorted by status, then fare)
UDU/EUA/CPU (sorted by status, then fare)

Grrrr, I knew YBM-Ups were before SWU/CR-1's/Co-Pay+miles :) I was lumping them all together, lol. Thanks for setting me straight. :)

On UA with the same PNR, you should both share your 1K status, and since the new hierarchy won't be in effect on October 7, I assume your old strategy will be as effective as it was in the past.

Global Services is extremely valuable... Lots of ways to trump UDU/EUA/CPU, aren't there?

Are elites exempted from copay when using miles to upgrade?

But if I run out of SWU's and want to use RDMs on p.s. or international routes, elites have to pay the co-pay? I've never tried it

Let's throw another scenario out there. A friend (CO Plat) sponsored an upgrade for my wife on PDX-IAH using a CO CR-1. Right now the flight is RN 0 / R 0 though there are a bunch of seats up front (F9).

If we get to the airport and she still hasn't been upgraded, should I add her as my companion?
