Survey just released. For almost every traveller, mergers are an ongoing disastef, but for subprime elites relegated downwards, mergers and the delays, crowded everything, fewer upgrades and connections have hit especially hard. Almost half of those surveyed want to curtail travel: this is a travel related organization-love to see what a truly independent comprehensive survey would say about how people really feel:

Interesting data point from the survey:
I think this may be the point referred to by ahappyelite above. My take-away from this is that airlines would see more business if they'd increase comfort and frequent flyer bennies instead of introducing the "enhancements" that just make things worse.

(But shouldn't this fall in the "glaringly obvious" department?)

Not to the quants in the airline's number-crunching division. Wait till another '08 style market meltdown for them to coming begging....

Oh ! wait they did that in '01 and '09

It really can’t be clearer: those who have seized control of the airlines are not airline people trying to distinguish their offering in a competitive setting. Rather, they are people who correctly calculate that there are way more customers than seats and they don’t particularly need anyone, no matter how much they spend.
Their horizon is right here, right now. How much can they glom this quarter-no regard at all for the long run. They can churn through millions of their own and each others customers.
Look at the utter destruction of JetBlue. They have made no secret that after they sqieeze every available cent out of it over the short haul, they hope, incredibly, to destroy it altogether through a merger, or who knows maybe through bankruptcy.
It is the mentality and motivation of those who wrought the subprime crisis on the nation.
