WINNIPEG — This city's core area is so dangerous and riddled with crime that Canada's largest airliner is no longer allowing its pilots and flight crew to stay in downtown hotels during layovers.

In a rare move, Air Canada has issued a bulletin to its flight crews saying staff will no longer be staying at the Radisson Hotel downtown due to increasing concerns over violent crime in the area.

Flight crews will now stay at the Sandman Hotel near James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.

Airlines usually don't publicize where their crews stay. While it's not a secret, it's certainly not something they try to publicize, either.

When AC issues an internal memo advising against staying anywhere in this fair city you can post it here instead of non sequiturs such as this.

speaking of internal memos -- this report was also a bulletin AC put out (presumably for their employees), so it probably was not meant to be publicized. Perhaps the reporter should have known better and redacted that part.

 About what I'd expected, sadly. When you can't argue the facts at hand you change the subject.

This issue is not going away. The Winnipeg Free Press still carries the news.
AC will learn that you don't "diss" the Peg without repercussions.
A friend who is SE flew WS this am in protest.

And the pilots get a free shot at the airline:

Strachan said he called Katz to assure the mayor that it's not the pilots or union who want to take all that business out of downtown Winnipeg.

    And an apology from AC:

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2011/10/03/mb-air-canada-hotel-winnipeg.html

"It appears that certain inferences are being drawn from the contents of a recent internal bulletin relating to accommodation for flight crews on overnight layover in Winnipeg," Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick told CBC News in an email Monday afternoon.

"Air Canada wishes to state categorically it had no intent to cause offence to any individual or group and apologizes if it inadvertently did so," Fitzpatrick added.
