[IMG]There’s one place on Earth most international globetrotters haven’t been: Antarctica. The southern continent isn’t very hospitable, and transit links are few. But these features also make it one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world. Nothing else is like it, and this kind of trip isn’t one normally available with miles and points.

Air New Zealand is partnering with National Geographic photographer Jason Edwards to send one lucky winner on a two week adventure to Antarctica. I’ve looked into going myself, and it can easily cost $10,000 or more just to take a cruise around the ice. This will be quite the trip, with the kind of experiences you can’t buy anywhere!

You can read more about the trip of a lifetime and enter online. The winner’s job will be to serve as the “Voice for Antarctica,” providing commentary along with Edwards’ photographs to share the natural environment of Antarctica and the research taking place with the rest of us back home. Here’s more detail from the contest website:

Spend up to 14 days learning more about scientific research by observing the people involved – experiencing all the fascinating aspects of Antarctica life along the way. Anchored at New Zealand’s Scott Base, you’ll split your time between documenting the work on the Ross Ice Shelf and environmental research teams…. Throughout, you’ll bring your experience alive for everyone back at home. You’ll share your experience and learnings, using your storytelling skills to create a voice for Antarctica, one of the most unique environments in the world.

All you have to do to enter is showcase how you would tell those stories. This can be in the form of a short movie, and audio clip, or a simple written entry. Air New Zealand has a few examples online if you need inspiration. I also suggest you read the press release to learn more about the kind of people they’re looking for.

Personally, I think I may be the best person for the job. Who better to spend two weeks at New Zealand’s Scott Base research station? I even have my own penguin suit. [IMG]
