"Virgin Atlantic could sign onto the SkyTeam airline alliance following the overnight purchase of 49% of Sir Richard Branson's baby by US carrier Delta, one of the founding members of SkyTeam..."

Given that Sir Richard recently said he'd concluded an alliance was needed:

"Virgin Atlantic has always enjoyed its independence, but since pretty well every competitor that we have has an alliance I think we have finally decided that to survive we need to have an alliance," he said in a Bloomberg interview last october, quoted in the Australian Business Traveler

It seems like they'll probably sign on to SkyTeam, especially because AF/KL talks seem to still be going on...

Remember that DL has a very nice bilateral partnership agreement with SQ until a couple years ago, around the time of the merger. It was reportedly one of the earliest airline partnerships.

I agree that Virgin Atlantic joining SkyTeam is all but inevitable with the purchase by DL. But the big question is: Can SkyTeam now convince the other Virgin airlines, particularly V Australia, that joining an alliance is the right move for them too?

I don't see VX being part of SkyTeam as long as they are independently operated.

I know very little about VX, so I'm curious why you say they won't join SkyTeam? Is it SkyTeam specifically or any alliance?

It seems to my amateur eye that SkyTeam is the best "fit" for VX, if an alliance is in the cards for them. oneworld has QF, and I have a hard time seeing the two main carriers in Australia in the same alliance. *A doesn't have any airlines in Australia, but they do have Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and several other SE Asia carriers that provide adequate coverage to that region of the world. VX currently has a strong partnership with DL. Do they have any similarly-strong partnerships with any other airlines--SkyTeam or not?

Doh! I'm still doing my best to learn all the airline codes, but there are a lot that I still don't know. Are there any US-based airlines aside from the new Big 3 that have any incentive or desire to enter an alliance? It seems like the ones left are either regional, low cost or niche carriers that aren't looking for the benefits of a global alliance.

So long as the initial operating restrictions continue they would not be permitted to join any alliance that included Virgin Atlantic. Thus you must be correct, for the time being anyway.

FYI... if you highlight the airline code, the help box in the top right will give you the airline. Works for other abbreviations, too!

Thanks for that reminder. I use the snazzy glossary every once in a while, but for some reason never think to use it on airline codes. I will try to remember to do that in the future!

They both have very close relationships with Amex and it would make sense for many other reasons.
