No, this isn't about what you think...:p

There have been times when I've used my miles to 'buy' a ticket for my wife but gambled on getting a CPU with my 1K status for me. So when I don't luck out, my wife ends up in the C cabin with me back in eco+. Now, my wife really doesn't need a wide seat with lots of legroom since she is only 5'2" and she hardly ever touches the food on UA (but that's another story...), so she wouldn't mind swapping seats with me so that I could enjoy the advantages of business.

Has anyone tried to swap seats like this? What is the reaction of the crew?

You can always ask the crew. Some are generous, while others won't allow any deviation.

I've never seen a FA complain about a swap done before departure (aka, before the cabin door is closed).

If you're looking to swap seats in-flight, it's at the discretion of the FA. Even if (s)he does allow it, I'd limit it to a one-time swap out of courtesy to the FA and the other passengers.

I never had a problem with the person assigned E moving up to domestic first. My wife and I would often take turns when we would get only one upgrade. Its my turn this time...

I have regularly experienced difficulty with this, but there is a lack of consistency.
A few years ago on AA domestic US the FA's were anti swaps and unpleasant, ( quoting security issues?? ), yet on AA international FAs were wonderful and couldn't have been more obliging.

More recently Aegean crew same inconsistency, some crew relaxed, others totally non co-operative.

I have never had a problem, although it has been a long time since the need arose. The only problem I might have had would be not letting my wife have the up front seat.

In the past I've been able to swap seats with my wife and letting her sit up front with no problem. Can't speak for doing it the other way around though, but I wonder if a crew might be a little less receptive to the idea. (Not saying they wouldn't allow it, but rather be giving the stinkeye!)

    BTW, welcome to MP, trobb49!

My impression is that while it is against the rules, most FAs are happy to bend the rules in the name of common sense. To the best of my knowledge, the people sitting in F don't get extra security to make sure they can be allowed so close to the cockpit. But you'll always find FAs who work to rule and don't seem to care about common sense.

I've never had a problem letting my wife take my F or C seat. Fortunately it's a rare occurrence. The one time was swapped "in-flight" was on the island hopper where she (despite lower status) got the F upgrade. She gave me her F seat for the last two segments after asking the FAs.

I suppose it was just good luck on my part. But, the one time I gave my wife the boarding pass for a seat up front, she came off the plane bitching about the "stuck up snob" seated next to her and the "fru-fru food" that she couldn't eat....

So, a sincere thank you to whoever sat next to her and Chelsea Catering.;)

I've done it for close to ten years with my daughter when we travel together, no one has ever said a thing. With all the seat swapping that goes on in F I can't imagine the FAs really care.

My wife enjoys tea/coffee in the executive lounges. Now that I've shown her a taste of the good life, I'm sure she would be willing to leave me for someone with elite points & miles!
