UA 838 from NRT to SFO.
52 biz first seats and only 21 booked

There are 33 folks on the upgrade list and the confirmed upgrades will go deep on that list today

and how many tickets didn't get booked b/c they wouldn't release ANY of these seats for ug before flight time? I, for one, won't book unless I can confirm the ug when I book:(

This was my policy for a while, but I'm now glad that several people on this board convinced me to trust the process and book flights with lots of F or BC seats open, but no R space showing. Since taking their advice, I have yet to fail to eventually make the UG in those cases. It will probably happen one day, but the odds are clearly in my favor.

This may not have been the case a year ago, but it has sure paid off over the last few months. If I'm really concerned, I'll use an instrument, although even those cases have sometimes been a waste of GPUs & RPUs. It felt like standing at a craps table at first, but not anymore. The combined experience of everyone on this board is a better gauge of reality than my own limited experience.

Are North Korea threats of a missile launch this week impacting travel numbers to the region?

Thanks, but for me paying almost double and "hoping" that my gpu will clear just doesn't cut it. I'm waaay too old to sit in econ for a 14 hour flight. Could do it when I was younger but not now. So UA doesn't get my money, but AA does;)

I understand now. Although I read a lot about people clearing consistently on TPAC and TATL flights, like you, I wouldn't be willing buy the higher fare on an if. All of my clearance experience is inside North America, between North and Central America or between Central and northern South America. I'm waaay too old to sit in E even for flights much shorter than 14 hours, myself. :)

I too am batting 100% on GPU (to business) but only 50% on GPU or CPU to F from C internationally. That said, two PEK-SFO were very last second... one was after take-off.

Yes, I noticed a ton of open seats on my flights to/from LOS last month. It is ironic that you can easily upgrade now on international flights (if you are willing to roll the dice) but it is near impossible on some hub-to-hub routes, even for 1ks.
