just got clearance from the wife that the kids schedule was free in late June early July for a trip. 4 days ago that was 4 tix to Hawaii. Supersavers are now gone and I dont have enough miles so its 3 tix plus $1200. And the 2 BR Marriott is gone, down to a 1 BR. Thinking this is gonna turn into tent camping in the woods. Which is fun as well

Please post sympathy only and no comments on me being a dumbass. I get that enough

exactly, Hawaii is nice but most of N America is glorious at that time of year !! (I'm assuming OP is in N America) save your $, go elsewhere & use the miles/hotel points for HI when your kids have winter or spring break !!
exactly ! I would say Canada IS awesome during the summer.:)

Oh, please. If I had a ten dollar bill for everytime I've been called a dumbass I could always travel in First Class.
If you're smart enough to be reading Milepoint, you're smart enough to put together the family vacation.
Is this really about your disappointment in not going to Hawaii? I'd focus on the wife; if your lucky you'll likely have to live with her for years after the kids are gone.
And, like as not, once the kids hit teenage years; not much that you do will really seem satisfactory to them, for the next decade or so.
So why worry? Enjoy your life!:):p:D

Know that you are not alone!

I dragged my feet too long on booking two award nights at the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome and now there is no availability. Stupid!

Fly to FAT and go on a road trip through the Sierras. Very few chain hotels, and the only things that fly are birds. You can pretend that none of us even exist for a week :)

When one door closes, another one opens.

Summertime in the Northeast or Canadian Maritimes is amazing. A bit of small town friendliness and some great outdoors. I have friends who believe Newfoundlanders are about as nice as they get. Personally, the nicest people I ever met were from Halifax.

Consider whale and seal watching from June-Aug (varies by locale).

Besides Canada, if you want to go to a beach destination, the Caribbean is always a good alternative. The Virgin Islands is a great place, Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, etc.

One of the best family vacations we ever had was to Costa Rica. Have your kids been?
We all also loved the combination jungle/beach vacation we took to Belize.

Obviously a personal decision, I save my points/miles to travel to beach or warm vacations when it is WINTER/COLD in the N Hemisphere, not during the summer time.

Sure HI & other island beach destinations are great, but if one hasn't been to a freshwater lake during the summertime (N Wisconsin/Michigan are personal favorites) or perhaps summertime hiking in the Rockies or other mountain area, I think one is missing out on some magic.

Oddly enough, this is a very new concept to me that I've started to adopt since moving to Seattle. Growing up in California, when it was warm to went to the beach, and sometimes that beach was in Hawaii. When it was cold you went skiing at Lake Tahoe. Even now I still kind of enjoy traveling to places in the off-season. So many fewer tourists, and I really don't like being all sweaty on vacation when I'm running around a new city.

(bolding mine) fully agree, better air/hotel rates, not crowded, better interaction with the locals generally, when possible off season travel is the way to go IMO, however not easy to do when one has kids like the OP or a spouse who is in education (like me) hence that is why burning points/miles when rates are high is a wise move.

This is largely how I traveled from 2001-2010, especially to locales such as Europe which are quite reasonably priced in winter and ridiculous beyond belief in the summertime.

Wow thanks for the feedback. It looks like one week camping in NH and a long weekend in NYC (kids choice on NYC). Unfortunately I am scheduled constrained at work and have only a small window to do this. So back to DAnforth Bay, which is great, and the Hilton in Times square via Amtrak or Honda Pilot.
