I have been a mileage plus member in Europe for almost 10 years. In the past I have used mileage to book hotels and car hire but have been told the current policy excludes Europeans from using their mileage for this purpose. Uniterd say they dont have to provide a reason for this and promotions vary. Look closely at the UK United Mileage plus web page and their is only encouragement to join and collect miles, no mention of exclusion at all. Another brilliant idea is I can fly three times a year to LA from london have enough miles for premier silver but sorry you need to fly 4 times to be allowed to be part of the mileage plus program. (Sorry wives and Partners no point in occasional trips any more).
Is ther any real point in trying to stay a United Customer when it appears that United dont like Europeans any more.

    Is "European" a race?

Or is this just a silly thread title meant to incite by misleading?? ;)

Oh, and if you fly 3x LHR-LAX-LHR then you have 6 segments, two more than you need to get elite status.

I'm sure they like European money just as much as anyone else's money. (Except the Dutch, I hear they hate the Dutch)

I dunno but? Since over the past year and the CO/UA "merger", things have changed. Check for rule changes and or expired contracts/law changes etc. etc. Things can get dicey when trying to match US/any other country contracts/deals anyhow. Da Mileage Plus ain't the same puppy as it was before March, 2012;) Welcome to COdbaUA:D, the worst of both sides combined:rolleyes: And well, each side blames the other. Lol.

You're upset that you can't use your miles for what is usually one of the worst-value redemptions possible?

This is the kind of thread that even FT wouldn't tolerate. I hope it gets deleted.

Using FT as a standard, especially its UA Forum....talk about a false dichotomy.

At least SAS Eurobonus and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles don't hide their prejudices. It's there in the names!

I generally try to avoid saying anything derrogatory about another member, but if you can't post something better or slightly more intelligent than this you have much more serious issues than dealing with United.

I wish they were more elitist. Seems like a lot of my elite has been deflated.

Note: thread title updated to reflect actual intent of discussion.

The tradition of different benefits offered to different regions of the world is actually quite old. Some will remember BA's different programs in the past. I haven't checked lately but where is DL and AA on the same since they also have similar awards opportunities (hotel/car rental)?

Although I missed the OP's offending title I do feel that he does indeed have a point. Some benefits and promotions of programs are not easily accessible or open to members not resident in the home country. Hence as Randy stated it is not unusual to offer sweeteners to certain groups of non resident members to reward their loyalty. Continental at some point recognized this (at least for European members). Now virtually all, if not all, benefits offered to European members have been withdrawn.

If that's the way United want to run things then let them open all their promotions (where possible) to all of us - even the terrible ones :).

Do European members still get free United Club membership?

I do believe CO offered that to Gold and above before the merger

At DL, the use of certain FF benefits (pay with miles, some shopping/hotel/car offers, free checked bag, zone 2 boarding at worst, status miles for spend) requires having a DL AmEx card, which are apparently available only (approximately, there might be some fine print and loopholes) to USA residents.
