While I certainly appreciate the vast and long overdue update to iOS (especially the notifications), the roughly 10% of us iPhone users who are jailbroken have had access to all of the features mentioned in the cnet article for quite some time. I'm not trying to debate one side of the coin; all I'm saying is that it is readily apparent that Apple pays attention to the jailbreak community and takes some ideas (and people) from it. I will certainly agree that when Apple takes ideas from the jailbreak community, the implementation and usability is wonderful. However, there are still many things that are capable via a jailbroken iPhone that will not be possible on iOS5. As a result, I will not be upgrading my iOS until the jailbreak apps and tweaks I cannot live without are updated to work on iOS5.

I'm seeing iTunes now say there is an update available for iPhone at least...so give it a try and be prepared to wait as the download has been painfully slow :)

You would only see the update once you run iTunes and then check for Updates in iTunes. It will then download the updated iOS, backup your device and then restore it with the new software. Once that's done then the device will keep itself updated without using iTunes. Be prepared to wait a while, the process is quite long.

I am having a hard time understanding your angst here - if you do not want an iPhone - do not use an iPhone.

    The update is via Itunes.

    10-12-2011 4-56-06 PM.jpg

it is recommended to update ITunes first and then download and update the iOS 5 update.

Once you have updated to iTunes 5 and you check for updates again you should first see this popup

    10-12-2011 4-42-23 PM.jpg

Clicking on that I then get

    10-12-2011 4-44-16 PM.jpg

Generally as part of the install a backup is done before any major update as part of the process....

This is the popup you will see

Download took about 16 minutes - almost 700MB ... then it syncs and does a backup ... should have the new version in the hour :)

Download was fast. Updating after and copying all back was over an hour. Patience is the key. Seems ok now

    This from TUAW

    ---

Server issues preventing iOS 5 updates for many - TUAW recommends a dose of zen
By Erica Sadun posted Oct 12, 2011 17:15

Sometimes, bad upgrades happen. Multiple users are reporting an error 3200 or 3002 when they try to upgrade to iOS 5, or getting a warning about ineligible upgrades. Some others are encountering other scary, silly, or exasperating iTunes hurdles on the path to bringing your iOS device into the latest firmware.

The 3200 and 3002 errors are the most pernicious and widespread of the problems we've heard of today, and they're most likely due to Apple's servers being overwhelmed by literally millions of users all trying to upgrade at once. Personally, my 10.7.2 upgrade has had "About 3 hours left" now for, well, hours.

You can spend the rest of the day tearing your hair out over this... or you can take a few deep breaths, take a break, put down the iPhone, and go do something else. The chances of everything resolving quickly over the next hour or two are slight.

Relax, go outside, breathe some air, give thanks for your blessings, and try again later tonight or maybe tomorrow. iOS 5 and iCloud will still be there.
