Have a Y class ticket on SQ 15 so ghought i should try to upgrade using UA miles but was told that SQ doesn't allow upgrades from north america to asia on 777 or 380 flights !! wTF? Do they fly any other plane. I think sq is fine airline but there are other good airlines in *A who do a great job of reciprocating. Anyone else have luck using staralliance upgrades from NA on SQ?

Is your ticket in actual full Y? *A upgrades only work on Y/B, which are generally very expensive coach tickets (quite often more expensive than discounted, restricted business class).

If your ticket is indeed a very expensive, refundable Y/B ticket, I might refund it and look for discounted business.

If, on the other hand, you bought the cheapest SQ coach ticket in hopes that it would be upgraded... I guess you learned something? Always a good idea to research things... SQ is known through the industry as zealously "protecting" their premium class products from *A awards and upgrades.

By Y class do you mean FULL FARE economy or do you mean generic economy?

The problem for the OP is likely that SQ does not publish the "I" inventory bucket to partners for most long-haul flights; they are correct that they cannot get an upgrade on the flights in question using the *A UG because SQ doesn't make it available. As for why, because they want to.

Perhaps not the bare minimum, but definitely more restrictive than others.

If you have points in the AmEx MR program or Chase UR you can transfer them to a KrisFlyer account and upgrade from there, pending space being available, of course.

Glad you enjoyed it. Traveling in Y is not that bad especially for premium airlines like SQ. I find Delta Y to be a great product too.

Hotels in India can be very cheap as an outright cash booking. Make sure you're getting a good value there.

You are right but in India cheap doesn't always equal to good value or safety. Places like Mumbai/Delhi are pretty expensive so for 7000 points I can get Lemeridien or ITC ( affiliated with SPG india) which typically go for $160 ish. Put thanks for yoru advice I will make sure its value added.

the next IHG point break hotels list is coming up at the beginning of next month, noticed you are a Plat Ambassador, you may want to keep an eye out for any great redemptions or properties on offer that fit into your plans, 5000 points is an absolute steal if it fits :p
