Who Really Benefits From Frequent Flyer Programs?
Posted by PeterGreenberg.com on March 3, 2014 at 10:36 am

We’re a nation of addicted frequent flyers who will do anything for those miles, but who is really benefiting?

Frequent flyer miles are a great source of profit for the airlines, but they have no incentive to make miles easier to redeem. Airfares are already up 14 percent over last year and showing no signs of slowing. So, why displace a revenue passenger for miles redemption?

They are profit centers. Focusing on the original, perhaps rhetorical purpose of FFP to incentivize airline purchases by offering travel misses most of the point of today's FFP. Look at Aeroplan.

Many of us here have benefited over the years, and it has been a great ride but those days are waning. The US public will always need some sort of version of Blue Chip (or S&H Green) Stamps, and that is what these programs have become.

Agree. I'd also propose that all the airlines read and follow closely both Milepoint and TOBB, along with many travel blogs. A few years of some publicly bragging about putting one over on the airlines are having an effect.
