Inspired by a post of milepointer James Dombrowski on his preference of Canadian Mist Whisky I'd like to open a thread on your likes of Whisky.

Inspired by a good friend who has been a collector of Single Malts for 20 years now I started to read about Whisky a few years ago and tried quite some Single Malts in the last 5 years or so.

My preference is for the milder ones, mostly Irish Whisky and Scottish Lowlands.

The ones I like most at the moment are:
21 yr old Bushmills Madeira Wood finish
10 yr old Auchentoshan Three Wood
    17yr old Balvenie Rum Cask
    Glenfarclas Oloroso Sherry Cask 1993

I usually don't like the most smokey ones but I do like the Highland Park 25 yr old Sherry Cask.

What are your preferences on Whisky and where do you usually buy it. Which Duty Free Shops have good variety and prices?

We have at least two threads on this subject now, but the subject is entrancing:

    http://milepoint.com/forums/threads/scotch-whisky-bourbon-lovers.3448/page-2#post-211668

I am biased towards the peatiest Islay, but I like many others too. By far my favorite shop is World Of Whiskys. They seem always to have the rarest of my passions, old Port Ellen bottling.

None of the Canadians appeal to me at all, nor do other Ryes. I do like the odd sour mash or single barrel American, but they are not my everyday tipple. From Duty Free only I am fond of JW Double Black.

Whiskey never really clicked for me. I prefer Grappa.

I like the smokey peaty single malt scotches, to some extent the weirder the better.

I have never had a non-Italian grappa. I am fond of it when the weather is cold.

Ah... its info such as the above that drive me nuts as I see how pathetic the availability of the good stuff is soooo limited here in Argentina. To give you guys an idea, anything above the medium end Macallan 25 years is just unheard of. After the crash of 2001, many importers did not honor their import quota and now that things are back to normal, they have to get back into cue and hope that in 10 years Asia leaves some stuff on the shelf for them to import again.... very sad.

haha... that is when you know you are in a really cheapo bar, when you ask what the well drink is and see that.

So, you frequent really cheapo bars... If the alcohol is not good there, what is...? ;-)

I have become quite a fan of bourbon over the past two years. I quite enjoy a nice Old Fashioned or Manhattan.

I like Basil Hayden's, Bulleit, Woodford, and Buffalo Trace quite a bit and keep bottles of all in my home. In a bar with limited selections, I'll typically order Knob Creek or Makers.

Johnnie Walker Double Black is officially available outside the airport duty free as of April 1. I have not yet found it anywhere, but for those who've become addicted it will be good to have a non-duty-free option.

For the JW Double Black fans I found it for US$75 for two litres at both MIA and CLT duty free day before yesterday. Oddly, that was the same price at which they were selling Black. I bought four bottles.

    Show me the way
    To the next whiskey bar

    For if we don't find
    The next whiskey bar
I tell you we must die

    Oh, moon of Alabama
    We now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whiskey, oh, you know why
