There are now accounts that in some jurisdictions that the taxes on certain travel are higher than the actual travel services themselves. Please use this thread to warn and be forewarned about the worst countries and cities that are tax traps targeting travelers on air, hotel and car rentals. Name and shame those jurisdictions that are the worst offenders in gouging travelers with excess taxes to fund their pet projects and irresponsible budgets.

The Phnom Penh, Cambodia airport has an international departure tax of US$25. You have to pay it between check-in and security.

Most airports have this fee assessed in the ticket price. PNH (and DPS among others) charge it directly to the pax. I wouldn't necessarily call this a gouge or unfair tax, but it is a shock if you're not aware of it.

And you can include REP as well. Although QV might actually include it in their ticket price (REP-PKZ).

It was included in my ticket price. I got nailed years ago at YUL and was upset because I had just rid myself of all my Canadian dollars. I then had to stand an ATM line. <:thumbs down:>

A similar thing can happen in BKK. Pax on an int-int transit in BKK who go through immigration are subject to a 700B departure tax because the ticket didn't assess the tax when booked (the assumption being that you won't be leaving the airport). I've had situations where the tax wasn't assessed, but pax should be aware of the possibility.

Panama. The tax is only USD$20 (I believe this increased to $40 on 1/1/10) but it is cash only.

Have to agree the U.K. is the worst unless you are connecting in under 24 hours.

Actually it is flying OUT of the UK that incurs the ridiculous APD, airport facility charges and other fees. Landing at UK airports, including London, is relatively inexpensive.

Most of the departures fees being discussed - in the $15-25 range - are typical for just about any country. In many cases it is built into the ticket cost rather than collected in cash at the airport, but it is there most of the time. Examples such as the UK APD are the real offenders in these scenarios.

Correction, UK air passenger duty is charged for flying out of UK. Especially harsh for longhaul premium travel.

I wish it was "only" £120 in APD to fly from UK to here. Try £170 [IMG]

Taxes flying from Australia are also not cheap. Usually more than base economy fare to NZ, for example.

Ouch - you're absolutely right, of course:

    Reduced Rate Standard Rate
    Band A 0–2,000 miles from London £12 £24
    Band B 2,001–4,000 miles from London £60 £120
    Band C 4,001–6,000 miles from London £75 £150
    Band D over 6,000 miles from London £85 £170

Of course there is logic. Foreigners don't vote against the politicians so an easy tax grab.
