My daughter is flying Cathay Pacific from LAX to CGK. We usually use Star Alliance carriers. Since Cathay Pacific is One World and most of my daughters travel is LAX to EWR would I better off establishing an American Airlines or British Airways account?

    Thanks for your input.

It depends on what your daughter will use the miles for eventually.

AA has a non-stop flight LAX-EWR that coincidentally is 12,500 miles regardless of whether you use AA or BA miles to redeem. For shorter flights, BA will cost fewer miles. For longer flights, AA is typically cheaper.

I think you would have better availability using and finding awards with AA for a LAX/ERW route.

Taxes and fees on BA award tickets can be high.

I'd say AA instead of BA since it would be easier to redeem LAX-EWR if she can't find availability on the non-stop and needs to make a connection. BA will then charge for each of the segments separately.

Wild card: put the CX miles in AS (Alaska Airlines). This would give you access to three airlines for domestic inventory: AS, AA and DL (for instance: LGA(DL)-DCA-LAX(AS)).
