Thought I would start a threat where people can upload their upcoming mileage runs or trips to sort of keep everyone informed and maybe even run into each other up in the air....

    DFW-IAH-SJU-IAH-DFW 4/23 - 4/25. Can't wait! About $0.026 CPM.

Much better than the FLL-IAH-SFO-IAH-FLL I did earlier in the year in one day. About $0.04 CPM. That one wore me out.

Looking for something out of MCO on 7/26, but haven't found the right deal yet. This beats the heck out of buying PAMs at $0.11/mile plus RDM cost.

I'm doing SJU later in the week than Ken. Also, later in the year, I have a trip to Rio at MR-like rates. Both have hotel nights, so not strict MRs. I also had two to BOS earlier this year. I completed only one of them due to Nemo.

Dictionary definition of a mileage runner:

Someone that flies someplace to to earn miles; usually flown at a low CPM (cost per mile).
Person usually stays a few hours at destination, then makes an immediate turn and heads home.

That's an interesting definition however anyone wants to define it.

I do weekend Mileage Runs where I stay a day or two I suppose. :D

One of the most 'famous' turns is/was SIN. You'd land at midnight in Singapore, then head to town to eat. After an under $10USD meal that included lots of food and beer, you'd head back to the airport for the 7:00am flight back to the states.

I did a few of these in the past.. But these days I rather spend a night.. Usually my runs are east to west coast nonstop or NY to Hawaii!! Also my CPM I try to keep it below $.050

The CPM for the following is probably not very good but each is a must do MR to make 1K again, but selected for it to be fun as well:

    1. LGA-EZE: August; went there for a meeting three years ago; have been back there ever since...

    2. NYC-SFO: October; probably overkill because by this time the next MR would get me to 100K PQM but I have a $300 VDB voucher that I must use or lose...I might wind up just doing LGA-ORD.

    3. JFK-HNL: November; annual B-day destination calibrated to coincide with requalification of my top-tier FF and/or frequent guest (FG) status (if I am short on points to make HH Diamond, e.g., I would splurge and book a suite that will get me the required number of points). So, this one could be a mileage run and/or a mattress run.

My definition of MR: Trip taken to ensure that very top-tier elite status is achieved in a FF and/or FG loyalty program, without particular attention to CPM...

I have two nights booked in SJU, too. I'm not saying that I wouldn't do another same-day turn, but the SFO run was a very long day. Even though I did use instruments to upgrade as insurance against complete torture.

On the topic of instrument upgrades, I have a new theory. I believe that I wasted those instruments on my SFO MR, as all of the flights looked pretty open right up to the window. If they are selling the tickets cheap, I think that's a pretty good indicator that the flights aren't heavily booked. The UGs via CPU, therefore, should be easier to obtain. I'm still looking good for the SJU run without using them.

Being 1K is a consideration, however, so those with lower or no status might have a different strategy. I also enjoy flying and seeing new places/old places that I like. It doesn't really feel like I am "earning" miles if I enjoy the trip.

I'll visit 5 continents this weekend on revenue fares. That's pretty much a mileage run, though I also will spend 12+ hours in 3 of the cities en route.

    Three separate tickets.

    1) JFK-DOH-BKK-RGN on an award issued by UA right before the QR partnership was terminated. Overnight stops in both DOH and BKK and the Airbus A300-600 for BKK-RGN unless they swap it at the last minute.

    2) RGN-SIN-PER-JNB on a mistake fare. RGN-SIN is operated by SilkAir. SIN-PER is operated by Singapore Air and PER-JNB by South African. I get 18 hours in PER and will be having dinner with a former co-worker I haven't seen in probably 10 years.

    3) JNB-IST-JFK on Turkish. This is a revenue ticket and not a mistake fare but at $700 pretty reasonable for what I needed. The part where I also get to spend 12 hours in Istanbul, one of my favorite cities in the world, is an added bonus.

The 5 continents starts on Saturday morning in SIN and ends Monday night at JFK. I could cut ~22 hours from the total time to touch the five continents if I take the ferry to Asia as part of my visit to Istanbul, something I was strongly considering anyways. But I get Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe and North America in the trip.

Total value isn't great on a straight CPM basis but it should be a lot of fun.

Here's what the trip looks like on the map:

I'll be about 5000 EQM short of Platinum status this year (usually I earn Gold). Is Platinum so much better than Gold that it would be worth my while spending a day and a few hundred dollars doing a mileage run to earn the additional 5000 EQM? Most of my travel is international (largely TATL and one trip to Australia).

The upgrade percentage as a Platinum is decidedly better than a Gold for sure plus the mileage bonuses at 75% helps versus 50% too.

I'm at the cusp of Gold this year and probably will drop down to Platinum from 1K as its been a slow year for me being ATL based now.

The fee-waiver for award changes would be worth it for me.
