do I cancel the original service first or after arranging the service at the new carrier?

Keep your current service and then ask for the port from your new carrier(amazonwireless does this for you, for example). Make sure you're off contract on your current carrier ;)

I just did this, I went from AT&T to Sprint. It was seamless and I didn't miss any call. It took about two hours for the entire process.

If you port within 30 days of canceling your old service or something it all works out but I like to keep both services active just to be on the safe side.

Always let your new carrier handle the porting and the cancellation!
