I Fly ORD/DFW/YVR in the morning it is about 7 hours of flying. I'm EXP so could get comp upgrade. Seat map shows 5 on DFW leg and 4 on YVR leg in F. I have 3 SWUs that expire in Feb 2014 that I probably won't need for intl travel (but I might.)

Would you spend a SWU on this to lock in the F?

If you don't think you'll use the SWU before it expires, then I'd go ahead and use one.. I had two left over that I didn't plan to use before they expired, so I decided to use them on my Thanksgiving flights to/from RDU.

ORD-DFW can be a tough u/g, even as an EXP. However, it's only a two~ hour flight, so I wouldn't be too concerned if it didn't clear.. Now if DFW-YVR didn't clear, that's a much longer flight in Y.

No, you should give it to me to use on an international flight so I can finally break out of the cattle section. :D (just kidding)

Like FriendlySkies said, if it's going to expire use it up if you might not end up using it later. I'd kick myself for letting a SWU expire (if I ever had one). I like that the 500-mile upgrades don't expire.

Well both the comps cleared so the SWU stays in the bank for now.

At least for as long as the instrument-backed upgrades don't come out of an upgrade-only inventory, there is minimal downside towards waiting to the last minute and trying for the free upgrade.

I have in the past used a SWU on a transcon flight 45 minutes before departure. Flight was F1 A1 and I was second on the upgrade list.

Same here. Great feeling, ain't it? Especially if you know who #1 is and can watch their reaction when they don't clear... :)

I didn't say it wasn't... and I'm not proud of it... but it can lead to some good conversations about how to use all your benefits.
