I'm looking for some ideas to get my milepoint personality off to a good start.

If there is anyone here that knows me and wants to give suggestions based on my real personality don't be shy.

I just use a picture of myself so I can identify my posts easily. I will, however, probably change it from time to time.

Weeeell, I don't know you, but guess you'd want your avatar to reflect something of/about you?

Just go to your profile and find a picture on your laptop, or steal one from the internet and upload it to your profile.

    (I edited the photo)
Never did get to fly on this plane, everyone should be able to work out where the photo was taken, but can anyone work out who took the photo.)

Sometimes I keep a fixed profile picture but other times like facebook I change it once in a while.

Try googling the terms avatar generator. You'll get scads of hits and there truly is something for nearly every taste. First one I clicked was MadMenYourself.com and I must say I rather like the, erm, likeness enough to keep it for a while.

I just like to use something that is important to me. In my case I love soccer and my favorite player is Ryan Giggs (hence the username)

You can go and sign up for gravatar and make your avator globally recognized via e-mail. You may have seen this in the comments section a blog post where it asks you for your e-mail address, but it's never published. That e-mail address can be associated with an avatar you registered with on gravatar.

Yes you are....I wish Marcus Hanneman played today, his niece and nephew go to school with my daughter and he was a couple of years behind me in High School. They played well today, very organized defense and a "pitch like a pudding".

You want an image or graphic which reads clearly in small size on a range of different display systems. So, strong contrast, strong primary image/theme, perhaps some minor theme images in the background.

Scroll through the avatars in this thread- you'll notice some are clear, jump out at you, tell a story, others are muddy. A couple have very good potential but not enough dynamic range- a little tweaking to add contrast (look for "curves" or contrast enhancement) in a graphics program (photoshop, paint shop pro, photo paint, gimp, whatever) and they'll come alive.

I'd say an avatar is serving its purpose if people can identify the author of a post with a quick glance at the picture, instead of reading the name below it. So it needs to be memorable, unique and quick to identify. I hope my little coon friend serves that purpose :)

In my case, a moniker I wear with pride due to my occasional non-conformity when it comes to IT issues... :)

In the end, use something you like, whether it represents something of you, about you or something you like; it's just something to represent something else... OK, it's getting too late to think about virtual representations of virtual identities... [IMG]

I was fretting over what I should choose for my avatar...and then I remembered that my partner - for our anniversary a while back - drew this super cute cartoon card of us sitting on an airplane... voila! Some editing in Photoshop and now I've got my new avatar. :)
