Is the focus on a mileage run acquiring the miles or the segments?
It depends on what you need and why you need it -- we've done both segment runs and miles runs, but only to get elite status for the next year.
For me, the focus is usually on the status qualifying miles. That is how I get my status as most of my flights are TPAC. Some might be on the segments for the reason that their flights are mostly domestic and short hops.
Depending on the specific rules for your carrier, if there are minimum mileage accumulations, then more short segments may help to accumulate more miles.
Rarely at an efficient pace compared to longer flights, though. It takes longer to fly multiple short hops and fares are not directly linked to distance flown.
And more chance for things to go awry. Multiple hops can stretch the miles to a maximum for a given fare paid, assuming little or no value for the difference in time taken. As with all of this it depends on what else you'd do with the time/money/etc. and how much you would value doing that instead.
True. As with all these things specific options need to be considered carefully depending on what the goal is. I personally wouldn't do more than 1 extra segment for any given trip, but that's me. Just trying to give a perspective to the OP.
