What is the $50 UA cert good for?

I've been saving this thing since I got the card almost a year ago... haven't had any use for it while I was in Asia and since I'm about to embark on another journey to the South Pacific am unlikely to use it again. Tried to trade it for something else on FT, but the identical Hertz certificates I was offered for it were kind of useless also.

So question is, when would it actually make sense to use this highly restricted $50 certificate? Its advertised that its good towards any UA or UA express round-trip flight within the US, Canada or PR/Virgin Islands. Must be booked by the end of this year for travel through the end of next year. BUT all the fares I searched say from NYC-South Florida were cheaper without the voucher than with it, whenever the voucher actually showed up, which wasn't that frequent for my travel dates.

    A bit frustrating.

If what you're holding is a "united.com e-certificate", then it really should provide about a $50 discount off of travel on domestic round trips.

If the terms and conditions of the certificate don't say anything about specific fare classes, and you're getting less than a $50 discount, that's a Web site bug which united.com Web support - 1 800 589 5582 - should be able to fix in about a 15 minute phone call.

You could always try to use it towards a nice fluffy pillow.

I think I'll hang on to it for a little bit longer, in the mean time maybe someone will offer something more meaningful on coupon connection especially something I can use in New Zealand... the best redemption for this e-cert I've seen so far was a very low $200's NYC-LAX fare for December... unfortunately I had to use VX miles for an upcoming trip to LAS because there were no UA deals I could take advantage of.

Coupon connection? Is that a function of mile point that I am unaware of?
I just had three United (3) coupons of $250 each expire. I wish I had known of such a venue.

Coupon Connection is on FlyerTalk while MilePoint uses "The Exchange" for Golds and above... and what a shame about the expired coupons... I could have put them to use! :p
