I usually stick with “HearPlanet” app, it’s similar to obligating a tour director in your compact, “HearPlanet” states you what attractions are closer and then shows the Wiki description audibly.

Apple maps because its vector based and works well offline. It does a good job on location without cell data connections just by picking up local WIFI connection.

I haven't used an iPhone in a while, although my 3 year old has an iPad he uses for gaming and videos while we're away... :)

I rely on TripIt for travel plans (WorldMate just didn't work out well for me), Waze / Google Maps for directions and occasionally Google's "Field Trip" app to find nearby places to explore that I might not know about.

Other than that, the usual suspects that are probably in everybody's phone here... the obligatory airline / hotel app, Uber for when I need a ride in a supported city and twitter to try and get ahead of the usual channels when there are issues.

One day Apple Maps will send you where you don't want to go if you don't pay attention. Especially if you use it for directions.

    I'll add to those previously
Mentioned : lonely planet and pocket guide. And if driving sig alert in case there is a breakdown that blocks traffic and you are in unfamiliar territory.

Sent from my iPhone using milepoint

I forgot to mention TripAdvisor for restaurant reviews. I always load up Yelp and get pissed off that its US only and then move to TripAdvisor for some decent recommendations.

Is there a particular feature you find better than Google maps? I struggle to find one other than the actual look of turn by turn instructions. But I rarely use it and I can less about the look than how it is actually getting me there.

Flightaware, The apps for whatever airline I'm on. The apps for the hotels I'm booked at, Weather, radar and map apps of course.

    I also like:
Award Wallet app (although the full web version is better as it's easier to copy and paste your account numbers)
    Candy Crush
    Tripwolf
    Bobsled (phone app for overseas)
    Pocketguide (guidebooks)
    Blue Letter Bible
