Going on priceline today to reserve a vehicle for our trip. What do I need to know about the extra
insurance? Last time I purchased it because it was last minute and we needed a car fast. :)

Check with your insurance agent before your trip, you may not need it, but if you don't own a car you do.

Some credit cards offer gratis car insurance when your car rental is charged with that credit card. You may also want to check with your credit card if such "renters insurance" is provided.

In particular the Chase United Explorer card offers Primary coverage. That's the card I keep on file with Hertz for example. Means if you have an accident it won't end up on your own car insurance, which might then go up as a result.

I've always wanted to rent a car, purchase the extra insurance and run it into a wall (which really means ram the first car that pisses me off).

    Doesn't AMEX do the same?

Yes, but you have to pay amex $20 for the primary coverage.
    Let them know beforehand

What do you mean "let them know"? I rent every week.

Amex has a "Premium" rental coverage plan available. The Premium plan does provide primary coverage but it costs $24.95 per rental. You have to enroll in advance, then the $24.95 charge is added to your card for each rental put on the card.

Each insurance company is different. Your home insurance company might already insure you for any rental cars - check with them.

There's a difference between liability insurance and damage/theft insurance. Something I noticed with CDN Amex Plat. cards is that they only cover the damage portion (up to $85k MSRP).

Not that many credit cards offer liability insurance for rental cars. My home insurance company covers this up to $3mil.

    Something to keep in mind.

Wow, thanks. I thought the coverage was both automatic and free.

Their basic coverage IS free and automatic. It is secondary, not primary, though and it doesn't cover cars like SUVs, sports cars or pickups. The premium coverage you have to sign up for.

Except that there are a number of countries which Amex does not cover you at all.

Thanks. Sometimes I get those as an upgrade. I'll def check with both my insurance and Amex.
Thanks. I usually try to be the one not driving on those trips!

I believe the best way it to check with your Credit Card and your personal insurance, sometimes you might be paying for something that is not needed.
