Taking a cue from this discussion, what are your greatest regrets as a frequent flier?

One of my greatest regrets was not joining FlyerTalk sooner, as I had an aversion to contributing to Internet bulletin boards at that time. As a result, I missed out on some of the deals, events and memories I could have enjoyed had I been a member — and I could have been an Original Member, as I have subscribed to the MilesLink newsletter since at least 1996.

After having learned my lesson, I immediately joined as a member of milepoint.com as soon as possible — and I am an Original Member here.

I was on a business trip to India on a Saturday night and they needed volunteers to be bumped on my flight from Newark to Delhi. It was summertime and you could tell many people were traveling to vacations or from vacations in the States. The offer got up to an $800 voucher to bump to the flight the following evening. I could not accept because I had work commitments on Monday morning in New Delhi.

My greatest regret is not concentrating my flights with one or two carriers early on in life and instead trying to save $5. I'll never get million miler status anywhere now.

Not being able to fly more.
Another regret? Out of my hands, but having never flown as a child. So I missed these early impressions of the world out there.

As a child, flights were boring; train travel was magical ! A window seat in a train was so fascinating, and in a plane just plain dull :(

Interesting insights, thanks for sharing, sadly as a child I experienced no flights at all and very rarely train travel. I'm glad that now, I can fly, even though it's not as much as I would like. But I'm happy nevertheless, because thinking about my childhood / young adulthood, it's way better now in terms of travel and seeing our beautiful planet.

Not maximizing my mileage earning through credit cards before the recession hit and took away my ability to maximize mileage earning through credit cards...

That, and I used to cash in US miles to fly domestic to LAS. ;)

Not hitting the gold dollar coin harder. That was a huge missed opportunity.

Not buying US Airways miles with the 100% bonus from day 1. Those are the greatest and best way to travel upfront.

None. It's been a great ride...

  18. The ride has been great; I was just a little early for the freebies that came with it. I'm over 2 mm miles with AC and at least another 1mm on other carriers. Been to well over 100 countries and territories and lived in several. Still going strong and will fly at least 150K this year.

As one who was doing long-haul int'l trips (e.g., JFK<->SYD in 1998) before being aware of FF programs, I could regret the thousands of miles that I left on the table, but I have no regrets because, well, it is a moot point. I was not aware of it at the time, and it did not bother me, so why would I try to undo the past? But once I became aware of FF pgms, the fun started almost right away because I reached elite status quickly and the ride has been so great that I have not looked back...

Not much in regrets but I should have invested more in the Kelloggs Nutragrain bars promo with the Publix doubler certs which gave about 1 million AA miles for about $3000.00 (plus you still had the bars to eat or donate to charity and take a further tax deduction)

With all the flights I took I could have been Lifetime plat on FB, FWIW- but I'd be hardly an 'annual complimentary' FO on DL...

This is the only minor regret that I have. Sure, I've passed on some super bonus earning opportunities, but I have traveled so much, most of which has been in comfort, that I don't know how/when I'd have traveled more. I joined both AS and UA MPs in 1986, have had elite status since 1992, and got to enjoy many years of a superior travel experience.

I suppose I can think of one other regret - not buying lifetime lounge access way back when.
