    Greetings,

I just booked a flight in M class IST-EWR for next month, and requested an upgrade (UA*G). Though, I naively then went to check if there were GPU "upgrades available" by ticking the following bold box:
How would you like your flight results displayed?
    MileagePlus Upgrade Award

It showed me that for my chosen dates, UA905 (IST-EWR) has no upgrades available, even though I am "waitlisted" after submitting a GPU. Does this mean I have no hope (there was no R inventory?) or...? First time trying to submit a request to use a GPU.

    Thanks,

It means there are currently no upgrades available. That doesn't mean there never will be, it just means that they don't exist today. If you are waitlisted for the upgrade then you should get it automatically if the R inventory opens up. I say "should" there because there are many reports of it not working consistently. But it is supposed to process that way.

    TBS there are a few things to do 1st next time before actually purchasing the tkt;

1- use "Advanced search' and check off the box next to Want to Upgrade near the bottom of the page, it will show you what if any flight/s are available then and there to be Upgraded. It may be the nonstop or it may show say TK to somewhere in Europe and UA from there with only the UA UPed

2- if the date you want doesnt show anything check a day or 2 before and after and see if they have anything

3- by having purchased your tkt and in Coach you have now entered 'Casino COdbaUA' in other words if your UP doesnt clear you will end up having paid alot more $$$(possibily) then you could have for sitting in the exact same coach seat and why I dont play COs games. Now if the fare you purchased was the cheapest for your date of travel and surrounding dates were the same then Congrads you wont lose anything, but thats usually not the case and most people pay for a higher Upgardeable fare hoping that their luck will win out and the UP ends up clearing some time before boarding

It used to be with UA that the difference was a couple of hundred after 3/3 its alot more $$$ between the fares Thanks to CO

Personally if at the time of purchase I cant get any flight confirmed I simply will prchase teh cheapest fare I can and fly in Y rather then play COs Game of Chance

You do realize that this is a policy carried over from UA, not from CO, right? CO would allow GPUs on any fare. UA had the W+ rule.

    Thanks for your replies.

Encouraging news, about the R inventory, but indeed it's a gamble. A 1K with fare class M sounds good and well, but sitting in the back of a UA 767 sounds threatening.

Instead, I canceled that ticket courtesy of the 24-hour flex, and will be taking advantage of the UA (East) Asia fare for next week.

    Totally random example:

    Nov 5-12 SFO-FRA on UA 900/901

    Cheapest fare (T): $1053
    W fare: $1212

Data from united.com as of 2 minutes ago.

So the difference is actually less than a couple hundred on this flight. And despite constant claims on FT and here along the lines of your quote above, I have often seen similar or slightly greater price differences. In my (limited) experience the price difference hasn't gotten worse since 3/3... to the contrary.

Does anyone have actual meaningful data to prove the often-made claim that the "GPU lottery" has become more expensive?

Then again, perhaps it's actually good to just rehash those claims and discourage people from buying W fares/apply GPUs... increases my own chances of getting an upgrade :D

I don't have extensive historic data by the little bits I've seen suggest that the issue is more pronounced TPAC than TATL. And then there's the part where the company no longer publishes fares on some routes, such as LHR-SYD, so you cannot get the awesome W fares on that route and use one GPU the whole way through.

The one TPAC flight I booked this year seemed to a have a lower fare delta than in previous years. But again, no real data I can compare. It seemed good enough for me to pay the W fare and waitlist GPUs.

OK, just for fun, taking same dates (11/5-12) and SEA-NRT-SEA

    Cheapest (L): $1261
    W fare: $1681

That's about the difference I was used to seeing on UA on TATL pre-3/3.

That may be a bit expensive for SEA NRT SEA, I purchased a W fare Mar 02 and was upgraded to BC for flights in Oct YVR SEA NRT BKK NRT SEA YVR for CAD$1179.00 and then with the taxes $503.91 TTL $1682.91
