Welcome to my neighbors living in the New York area. This area will be for discussions of the airports in the area, large and small...

Hey Art! Glad that you started a NY area thread! I was thinking that we might want to share off-site parking suggestions, etc.

Don't forget the train station, too ... I visit NY Penn Station more than any airport these days

I discovered taking the train from New York (the 'burbs above NJ) is really easy and only $15 each way to EWR. You switch in Secacus and pick up the North East Corridor lines. Took me 65 min last week to be on the monorail.

Believe it or not, I usually just park at the airport. It's expensive but awfully convenient :)

Parking at ISP is very reasonable however, just over a third of the price at JFK....but only practical when flying WN.

My home until the end of the month, yay!

I have yet to try Westchester and Islip out of all the NYC area airports. I'm sure hardly anyone would agree with me, but JFK is the most convenient airport.

Depends on where you live, TrueBlueFlyer - JFK or LGA are about a draw for me - equally inconvenient, but necessary since ISP has limited routes.

from Bergen County the closest airport mileage wise is LGA (technically TEB but its out of my price range ;) ) however driving in at 4am I noticed it took me 30 minutes flat from driveway to parking lot at JFK. Of course 6pm on a Friday typically takes hours, but more importantly there are reliable public transportation options, whereas to get to EWR using bus/train sometimes takes longer and is more expensive than JFK or LGA.

Also from Bergen (sometimes)... EWR is usually faster for me than LGA given the traffic on the FDR and GCP. And the tolls are less to EWR :)

oh yes... tolls are a killer... what is it like $20 bux now to get to/from LGA and JFK?

But now, with EZPass, they have removed lots of the pain of shelling out at each booth and also sort of buried the cost of each transaction in a monthly statement. All you know is that your credit card bill is a bit larger than you expected. [IMG]

EZPass is good also for paying on-airport parking fees...makes it easy to organize expenses.

I used one with a rental car. I didn't realize that the fee tacked on by the rental agency was just for giving me the pass, but didn't cover any fees, so I discovered an extra chunk on my credit card bill that month. Problem was, the info on the bill was obscure, it took quite a while on the phone to track down the reason for the charges.

EZPass is good for paying the parking fees, but too often the booth employees would ask for the device rather than have it work in situ.

JFK is my typical NY arrival/departure airport, but growing up LGA was closer.

I fly into and out of HPN very frequently. It's so convenient if you are in White Plains, Tarrytown, etc. I must say that the waiting area beyond security is a real cattle pen and it gets pretty unbearable when there are delays. But hey, you can't have everything and some days you're lucky if you get anything at all. It beats the you-know-what out of the traffic to get to LGA and the interminable waits to take off.

Pic was taken about 3PM on a Thursday - [IMG]

Remind me never to go to HPN at 3PM on a Thursday. [IMG]

Although I live and work within a couple miles of HPN i still prefer JFK for the AC. LGA if I have to or if I'm forcing a NYC-Europe back through DFW or ORD.

Are non-natives allowed to post Art ? ;)

For out of towners, especially connecting into or out of the greater NYC area, knowing how to get from one airport to the other via their hotel might be interesting info. I'm usually/always traveling with a checked bag, and given my lacking native-NYC-public-transport-skills (trust me, it's very different from London, Holland, Germany etc. !) I prefer things like the Olympia coach bus from Grand Central to EWR.

Gems like that would or could be of interest. :)

I used to fly out of HPN a lot (pre 2005), never saw it that bad. Couldn't imagine if all '4 gates - i.e., both doors' got used at once, there could be that many people! It looks more like the Air Canada boarding area at LGA in the afternoon!

hi!all! fellow nyc-er here. I am likewise a fan of the olympia bus, especially form port authority to/from EWR. best use of 25 minutes and $15 to the airport :)

that, and NJ bus 193 or whatever - for flying on the cheap :D

Nice to see a thread like this. Yup, for EWR, I take the Olympia bus near GCT. For LGA, I take the E to the Q47 or Q33 depending on which terminal. For JFK, it's the E to the Airtrain.

I for one drive to the airport... parking rates are brutal ($30 a day or more) but you can't beat the convenience. Plus if you're traveling with other people it brings the per passenger average down compared to taking public transportation.

I know people do it, but I can't even imagine taking the subway/bus to the train.
