In case you're wondering why AA chose the massive flag motif on the tail of the new livery, this is the reason. They feel like they're the flag carrier of the USA. That point was repeated a couple times quite poignantly by executives at the event AA hosted on Friday at JFK to celebrate the new livery.

From Tim Ahern, Vice President of New York & International:
An interesting move, I'd say. Not the one I'd make.

Also, as part of the event I got to take a bunch of photos of the plane and get up close with it. The logo part is even better in person, I think. The tail is still something I'm not a fan of, though I do think it accomplishes their stated goal reasonably well.

Finally, at the event they were giving away posters of a rendering of the livery flying over a mountain somewhere. I grabbed a few. I'll give one away to someone here on MP who wants one; just leave a note in a reply here. I'll choose someone in a week or so, I suppose. The other two will be given away on my blog to comments there, so feel free to toss you name in the ring there, too.

More photos from the even in my gallery here. Or in the gallery of AirlineReporter here.

What about North American's (and to some extent US Airways') tail(s)! Surely they got in on the flag-flying bit earlier than AA and will feel offended about AA's claim to now be "flagship to the world for America" :)

I'd love a shot at the poster!

Great shots and I agree with you completely. I was just in LGA today and saw them celebrate the delivery of a new 737 with the new livery. It was pretty neat. They had a sign setup with food and drinks and I suppose there was some sort of speech done for the AA staff at some point.

Here are some pics (they are in no way as good as yours ;)):

Maybe I will change my mind when I see more of these planes live... but I get the impression that the new livery looks a lot better on the larger birds like the 777. The photos of the 777 in the new livery looked very good to me... the above photos of what I think are new generation 737's dont look that attractive to me....

I guess its like when cars change designs.... I remember barfing at the new BMW designe they introduced some 5-6 years ago and now they feel just fine.... I guess your eye gets trained to accept and even like things after a while...?

As the the flagship to the world.... I guess its OK for most destinations, but me thinks that AA is not going to fly into some middle eastern markets any time soon, or...? They need to bring back the Pan Am brand for that....

    :D

Guess the Chinese market is more important than Russia for American.

I am not sure that the U.S. has a flagship carrier these days. AA, UA & DL are all high profile carriers. But if you were to pick a flagship carrier, it seems to me that UA & DL have a greater claim to the title as they have a far more extensive international network than does AA. UA & DL each picked significant pieces of Pan Am, which was once the flagship carrier. While AA has superior South American coverage, it has little Asian coverage, and an inferior European route netowrk as compared to UA & DL.

Which is why AA has been pushing the idea that they will expanding quite aggressively in the next 5 years. They're not oblivious to their shortcoming in this area.

So as compaired to using to CO logo for the "new" United I'm happy for the new look, it's fresh looking and doesn't have strong iconography to some other business/era.

The new livery isn't too bad, except for the weird and clownish tail, and that slanted sort-of-eagle-beak thing. And the font.

No, they did leak a presentation that pretty much showed they'd like to expand in all areas, though it did not note to what degree they'd expand in each area.

    It's called American Sans.

It was sitting at DFW C1 today when we came through around 12:30 PM. Looks better in person than it does online, and was immediately distinctive.

Most of the folks on the Skytrain didn't seem to notice... or recognize... the difference.

I spent about 30 minutes prior to the event on Friday watching people as they passed through the terminal where it was parked out the window as they headed towards the tunnel to the remote gates at JFK. It was interesting to see their reactions. The one woman who stopped to photograph herself in front of it was particularly entertaining.

I'm hoping, if I'm lucky, that it's the bird AUS-LAX tomorrow, but I haven't seen it come to AUS. Not likely but would be fun.
