Does anyone know what the TSA's actual policy on this is? I've always simply held mine over my head whilst passing through the machine. In ORD a couple days ago they were actually telling people to do that. Two days later in MDT they were unhappy that I had done so and made me xray my wallet individually. Earlier this week in DEN they had the same approach.

Anyone know if there's a new policy or if this is just airport/agent specific policy interpetation/formulation?

Classic case of the TSA enforcing things differently at different airports.

Don't bother asking anyone else at the TSA, they embrace this methodology, calling it "designed inconsistency," whereas the real world calls it "the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing."

My wallet goes into my carry-on. As do all other items other than the liqui-bag and the laptop. And I don't go through anything but the metal scanner.

I can't imagine putting a wallet through the Xray machine in a way that someone can see the wallet and grab it or some of its contents.

I've been asked to take my wrist watch off for the nude-o-scope and I absolutely will not put it into one of the small circular bins. It will be hidden and zipped inside, in a less obvious place for a thief to access.

All my stuff (wallet, keys, phone, ...) gets stowed away in the carry-on before I even get into the security line.

Me too, but I felt blindsided by the demand that I remove my watch. One other time, the watch and that area of my arm. bare skin, was fondled to resolve the anomaly of my watch.

I wish more people would not futz around with keys, change, etc. at the table. Also, my bag is locked.

I think you should get one chance with the metal detector. Fail it due to keys, coins, giant bracelet or ear rings, and you're in the glass box waiting for the fondler. Yesterday I watched a lady take three tries to get through.

(NB: I have failed the metal detector myself -- apparently because a pair of cargo pants had too many metal buttons. Now they no longer get to go on trips with me).

Thought the rule used to be 2 strikes?

Maybe they were generous? (with the rest of the travelers time, for sure)

Besides... rules and TSA doesn't compute :) (see Captain Oveur's post #2 above)

I do exactly the same and make sure all of my valuables are in an inside zipped pocket of my carry-on.

No nude-o-scope for me. Great ideas on locking everything down in the carry on!

And another guy who needed three attempts tonight at SFO. First failed and he removed cellphone and belt. 2nd attempt failed due to big honkin' metal watch on his arm that anyone could see from half a mile away (short-sleeve shirt). I slipped in between and through the metal detector while he went back for a second little bucket for his watch.
