Thanks for posting. I understand W philosophy, but honestly, I do not get this design at all for BKK.
It resembles work of Philippe Starck a lot, but I am still scratching my head for its relevance to Bangkok (or Thailand).
Thanks Kalboz! WOW, at first glance, AMAZING! Is this hotel the new Bangkok Cool?
The concept of the W Bangkok is being designed by AVRO/KO which conceptualized and designed many acclaimed New York City restaurants such as PUBLIC, Double Crown, The Stanton Social, Quality Meats, and Park Avenue. So I would venture to say that the concept is Gotham City type of design and has a little to do with Thai culture or design ... modern Bangkok being the Gotham City of the Orient.
Slick design but I can't see myself staying there. I'm not a big fan of anyplace that focuses on dwelling in the dark. It's too hard on my aging eyes.
I believe the entire set was rendered in the dark (evening) to convey this dark mood ... like the courtyard cafe photos above and the outside of rooms through the windows.
I can't believe I am saying this, but after my initial reaction of not liking this design at all, it has now moved onto the list of hotels I would really like to stay at.
There is something about the design that is drawing me in.
There is another great design hotel in the works in Bangkok ... Ritz Carlton Residences & Edition Hotel
Wow! Very different in all aspects compared to, say, the SGS. Can't wait to get back to Bangkok and check this out next year. May have to push a possible Bali trip back a little to catch the W Bali there and then the W Bangkok on the way back. W/SPG meets Gotham...nice...does that mean once we land in BKK, we shoot the bat signal to the concierge and our ride is there to meet us outside the airport and rush us through traffic to the hotel?
They are working day and night on this site ... I am expecting a timely completion! More photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kalboz/with/6597685853/
A must try for me since I never stayed any W yet. So Bangkok again this year...
Looks interesting indeed- opening date showing as October 1st now on spg.com.
Wow... Delayed. Might reschedule or another Xmas/new year in BKK again?
That would be the best time to visit
Agreed- the weather in bangkok at Christmas is great.
Yes, absolutely for people who living in hot and humid country like me. Cool breeze really made my day in BKK last Dec.
Agreed. Also popping up to Chiang Rai for some fresh air is always a wonderful break. I quite like the LM hotel up there which has a great combination of service, style, and value.
SPG.com states now W Bangkok - Opening October 1, 2012
I guess they moved the opening date down for 3 months!
Thanks Kal for posting- this is an area of Bangkok that I have mostly ignored except for the odd meeting- it will be good to learn about a new Bangkok zone.
The W is rising!
Nice indeed ... but the opening date has moved up to December 1, 2012
