A volcano has erupted in Iceland, causing some small earthquakes. Currently planes are being routed toward the south. A "no fly" zone 120 miles in all directions has been established.

What, mostly likely will each airline do with routes that may or already are affected by the volcano? Do they cancel or reroute? If they cancel, do we received full refunds, options to rebook for a later date, or what? I've never been impacted by something like this and have an upcoming wedding in LHR and FRA. Thanks for looking into your crystal ball...

It really depends on the scope. Most will try to re-route as much as possible, however eventually too many planes get out of position and get trapped or grounded. Last year, much of the EU airspace was closed by authorities, with much residual resentment as many airlines felt it was excessive and unnecessary.

Different airlines dealt with the situation differently. BA was particularly bad with communications (no surprise there) and even when they returned to operations, not good about getting people reaccommodated efficiently. Of course, being based in UK, they were most significantly impacted of all the airlines. Literally hours on hold to get through, and no automatic reaccommodations, or electronic even through travel agents. Hopefully they learned from that, but we'll see. When they did start flying again, many flights went out partially empty as they didn't get the word out properly, even as thousands were waiting for flights.

Hopefully you and your wedding parties have trip insurance, though not all cover natural events such as this. It is now too late to purchase most likely as this is now a "known event."

    When are the weddings?

At about 830am local time (430am NY time), KEF airport was closed to both arrivals and departures due to volcanic activity.

Domestic flights within Iceland operate from a different airfield, RKV. While RKV is open at present, many domestic flights have also been cancelled. RKV has very short runways, the longest being a little over 5,100 feet. It could land a 757 if needed, but not much else bigger.

Local experts are saying that the output from this volcano is not as fine as the eruption earlier which disrupted most trans-Atlantic air travel, so it is less likely to drift as widely. Further, this volcano has erupted 3 or 4 times in the past 30 years and hadn’t caused a material disruption to north Atlantic air travel. Of course, each eruption is different…and like earthquakes, our scientific community still knows so little, so it is tough to tell if prior experience is indicative of how this will play out.

At present, the wind is blowing to the northwest (towards Greenland), and away from most trans-Atlantic air routes and away from Europe. Winds may change at any time.

In any event, if your travels are taking you to Iceland soon, your plans may be upended.

Let’s hope this ends quickly and without incident.

If you're not flying to KEF (which it doesn't sound like you are), you're fine at present. Apparently the output from this volcano is different than the one that mucked up Europe for a week...so perhaps the risk of a widespread shutdown is lower.

So far there are no problems and this is a different volcano than last time. The ashes are being carried northwards and hence all flights will be routed south of Iceland. The type of the ashes being much heavier and bigger in size than last time makes them fall much much quicker than last time. Nothing has been affected in Norway; if we are fine here, don't worry yet.

Early and mid-June - trip insurance...hmmm don't know if any of the guests purchased trip insurance. I try to encourage couples to purchase wedding insurance, however most decline.

As a "victim" of last year's volcanic mess, I really hope this does not turn into a disaster again...:)

I fly to Iceland in a week and then on to Germany. I hope it doesn't impact my plans. :(
