The proposed alliance, which allows the airlines to code share, as well as jointly market and price services, comes after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission gave the deal a preliminary green light last week. It is part of wider strategy by Virgin Australia to establish a global network through a series of alliance partners that also include Delta Air Lines, Etihad and Air New Zealand. Both airlines welcomed the news. “We believe the proposed alliance will enable us to offer a competitive, first-rate product to Australian and Asian travellers, as well as promote tourism in the two regions,” Virgin chief executive John Borghetti said. CAPA boss Peter Harbison said Mr Borghetti had undertaken “a remarkably wide range of initiatives that served substantially to redirect the operations and nature of the group’’. “Through his vision and commitment to implementing an innovative airline model, he has pushed the boundaries of industry thinking,’’ Mr Harbison said. “As very much the second force in Australia’s domestic and international market, he has exposed a rapid expansion and repositioning strategy which is there for others to follow.’’ Other winners included Japan Airlines and Changi Airport.
