Burlingame-based Virgin America, which just celebrated its fifth birthday, has flown past Delta and Southwest airlines to become the second biggest passenger carrier at San Francisco International Airport.

A new report from SFO shows Virgin America holding an 8.5 percent market share at the airport, based on passenger traffic during SFO’s budget year that ended in June 2011 compared with the budget year that ended in June 2012. Virgin America’s passenger traffic and airplane capacity at SFO jumped 36 percent during that period.

At the KIVA Do in SF we had a chance to go behind the scenes at Virgin and met some of the employees. Having done that I can well understand their growth. Kudos to them!
