    The miasma of urine, diesel and and body odors reeked in the dense and stale early morning air along Taft Avenue in Pasay City. A man lay near a fresh pink puddle of vomit on what was left of the crumbled sidewalk as people crowded the markets, struggling to go about their everyday lives. Meanwhile, a man held a woman tightly while snuggling under a frayed blanket, sleeping against a shack of a building. Their two young daughters lay asleep nearby on a sidewalk, also huddled together under a single drab blanket.
