I've found through experience that certain sites have thresholds. I won't try a new restaurant without a personal recommendation unless it has at least 4 stars on Yelp. Similarly, I expect a hotel to have at least 3.5 stars on TripAdvisor. One needs to account for variations in other people's standards as well as the occasional bad experience. But if you relax the threshold too much, you find a lot of places that are barely skating by.
