Does anyone here know anything about the strategy of playing video poker?

Specifically, I would like to know the following:

    1. In playing Jacks or Better, is it advisable to hold a small pair (10's or less) instead of a jack or higher you are holding?

    2. How many different face cards should you hold (assuming that a straight or a flush are not one card away)?

    3. Is doubling down a good bet? If so, how many times should you do it on any one hand?

Jacks are better to open. You get a good car jack, open the back of the machine, and empty out the coins.

Hey! I am serious. A friend in a local Arab village recently put two (I believe, illegal) video poker games in his shop and I want to win.

That machine is definitely programmed to favor the house. So, don't worry about what you do, just feed coins into it and your friend will like you.

I invested 100 shekels and cashed out at 117.10 but I didn't bug him to give me the 0.10.

Try to make sure you are playing 'full pay' JoB (9-6 JoB).

Refer to Bob Dancer's website. He also sells nifty strategy cards.

There is definitely strategy. I watched stimpy win over 20K in one hand following Quitelions suggestions. And yes he treated us to Krug after they walked out a 1 inch thick pack of C-Notes to him.

Sounds like a $5, max coin Royal Flush. [IMG]

Ahem, that was two inch thick packs of Benjy's. :)

When I see two royals of the same suit in my dealt hand, I get interested. I think this time I was dealt 3 royal spades and I went for it. Ka-Ching!

Actually this was in the hi-limit area at the new MGM. So it was I think $100 per hand to pay out $20K for a RF.

Sounds like a multi-hand machine; since a single-line $100 Royal Flush would pay (considerably) north of $20K.

Of course, I'm certain that QL recalls the exact details. [IMG]

In any case, sounds like a GREAT TIME; and yes, strategy is important!

Yes, I think it was multi-hand. But this was ten years ago! Pre 9/11. Who can remember that far back?

It was $75 a hand, a $5 triple play machine with five coins per hand. It was your third spin.

I'm off topic in this off-topic thread, but I have to ask you that: I never ever get "cute girl" ads here on milepoint but instead all those financial ads. But opening this thread all those almost naked girls tease me from everywhere mp has space for ads. Does it have to do with the OP...? How can this be explained...?

What ads? I don't see any ads? Perhaps my hosts file blocks them.

Okay, I'm a little late on this, but do me a favor, Dov. Next time you are there, check out what the payout on the JoB is for the Full House and the Flush. Report back and we will be able to help you with strategy.

I'll do better than that. I will give you the payout for all results:

    High pair: Even money
    2 pairs: 2 for 1
    3 of a kind: 3 for 1
    Straight: 4 for 1
    Flush: 5 for 1
    Full House: 8 for 1
    4 of a kind: 25 for 1
    Straight flush: 50 for 1
    Royal Flush: 800 for 1

That's known as an 8/5 machine, which means it pays 8 for a full house and 5 for a flush. House odds of about 1.5%.

I would go with the others' idea to get the Bob Dancer cards for best strategy.
