I have a trip coming up in May to London where we will be staying at the MayFair for 4 days and then off to Paris for 5 Days at the PH Vendome and Madeleine. I plan on propose to my girlfriend while in London (she has not traveled out of the country and has always wanted to visit London)!!

    My 2 questions are:
    1) Where should I keep the ring? Checked Bag (may be lost) or carry on (might pull it out of my bag in front of her!)
    2) Where should I do it?! I would prefer to do it outside with beautiful scenery so I was thinking near Tower Bridge, Trifulgar Square, near Big Ben along the river?

I would love to hear everyones advice on either of these questions! I have been planning this for a long time and I am excited that it is getting close.

I have no worry of her seeing it on here because she is not into the miles thing and would never find this site HAHA :p:D

Firstly, CONGRATULATIONS on your big upcoming trip.
I recall mine was a simple affair, classy dinner on top of a hotel and staff bring out the ring on a cake during desert.
    The "classics". Tried and true.

Never been to London so no help there but I certainly can advise you NOT to check in your ring. Even if the ring arrives safely, it might not arrive on time etc etc.
And in some airlines, you would have to declare it for insurance purposes and you could still have issues. Keep it with you but camouflage it to prevent accidental discovery by her. :)

Congrats in advance (I hope!). Do you want to do the proposal in London or Paris? There are many scenic places to propose along the River Thames, but it doesn't beat having the Eiffel in the background. My vote would be for Paris with your back to the tower for an unforgettable memory. You could also go into the tower and propose while above the city.

ETA: A small/mini ziplock bag designed for jewelry can be inconspicuously buried in your sock or sewn in/attached to an interior pocket in your coat (just make sure to keep the coat with you). Another good hiding place is your toiletries bag, just keep it with your carry on (women never look in there).

Also, is she a fan of any particular places or movies? If she's a fan of "Notting Hill," it's not a far trek from London to the Portobello Mews area, and they have a quaint village area and feel (busy street traffic on the weekends). Stonehenge is pretty boring once you've seen it and not likely to be too memorable unless she's a history buff. There are many restaurants along the River Thames with outdoor balconies if you want to go that route (OXO Tower & Restaurant is one option). To go for the exotic and romantic in London, try Archipelago for a unique menu and sultry interior.

Since you're not going until May and I'll be there in less than two weeks, let me know if you want me to scope out some more details (I'll be there for 5 weeks, albeit not inside the city as much).

ETA (yeah, again, more things keep coming to mind): If you've heard of those secret gardens in the Notting Hill area and think that would be a good option, let me know. One of my best friends lives in the area and has a key to one of the "secret gardens" and it's a beautiful path. I walked down it and have pictures somewhere.

Spring time is Paris....not London!!! Weather is always better in Paris.

When traveling overseas always have a money pocket......like a shoulder strap with a pouch to keep ring. Keep's it close to your heart.

If you must go against my advice here are the London tips but let me assure that London can be cold and wet while Paris brings out the PASSION in the females!!

I found the pictures from the secret garden and will upload in a few minutes. I forgot they had benches along the path.

I think I would like to do it in London because I want to do it at the beginning of the trip and that is her dream city! As far as "likes", her and her Mom have always like the Royal Family and do things like get up super early in the morning to watch the Royal Wedding haha (I was actually forced to watch part of it, but at a reasonable time since I was in South Africa haha)

I didn't really want to do it at a restaurant, more of something like just walking along and stop at a beautiful spot, talk, kneel and ask! :) If you see any places while you are there that would be scenic for this please do let me know! Thank you!

I agree with you guys that carry-on is the way to go. I will just have to be sneaky!

    TUMD,
Agree, if London is her DREAM city then should be the location. May? Maybe August would be better date. Follow the hint....when was the Royal Family wedding which ensured good weather?

As for the location......you should do it while all cleaned up and in a romantic spot!
Contact Prince Harry for a fun night out!

I have always had a hidden money pocket but it is all worn out so this is the perfect situation to get a new sturdy one! I agree that Paris will certainly have better weather as I was in both cities around the same time a few years ago but I don't think I will be able to wait 5 days! haha Also, I think she would find it extra special in London. Thanks for the sites and advice!

If you take any Rx medications you might hide the ring in one of those pill bottles if it fits (and isn't clear). She would presumably have no reason to look in there. Hide it in a secret place in your carryon that you never use at all. :) Don't do this with OTC medications... she might go for an Advil and get a big surprise!

Many congratulations to you. I'm sure you'll get loads of great suggestions here.

It sounds like the secret garden would be ideal, although I'll keep an eye out and ask my British friends for suggestions. Attached are the images from the secret garden in Notting Hill. The entrance is hard to find and there are ample spaces to the left just out of the images if you wanted to do a picnic or something more elaborate. If you're interested in this route, let me know so I can bribe coordinate with my UK friends.

"I will just have to be sneaky"

Money belts come with shoulder strap and can be worn under shirt.
Can carry passport, credit cards, cash and ring all in pouch hidden under shirt! Unless she is frisky on flight over!

Speaking of economy, this trip will also be her first ever time in a 1st or Business class cabin as we are taking Iberia Business Class back from Paris ORY-MAD-MIA (with free 1 way to HNL in Oct ;)).

I was fine until you posted that; now I'm jealous. All my TATLs are in steerage, include my upcoming one. :(

She, however, will appreciate the service, space, and lie-flat seats. Might want to ignore the mile-high advice unless you want a very unexpected ending to your proposal trip. ;)

    Never in your checked baggage!
Toiletries bag may not be inspected by the girlfriend, but any light fingered thief looks there for women's jewellery. So if it is left in your room while you are out sightseeing, it's vulnerable.

Maybe an acceptable spot would be in the bottom corner of your wallet, held in place with a bit of duct tape? This is one item you never let out of your sight, & unless you are getting her a huge rock, it should fit.

In London - you can rent a private carriage on London Eye w/champagne -the views in day if clear are amazing - Big Ben, Palace, River Thames are lovely - at night spectacular all lit up. The ride is about 1/2 hr if I remember it's a slow journey around. You may also consider new Shard as you can go out on observation deck - think Empire State Building

you could hike up all the stairs at St Paul's for their observation area as well but that get crowded

the palace is open in August for tours but I heard that they may change this so do look b/c how cool would that be mid tour in the palace? alternatively Windsor Castle is lovely

Do also look at hiring Flytographer they are amazing for travelers it's like your own paparazzi with photos - their Paris work is stunning. This way they can take photos of your engagement w/o intrusion

Do bring ring as carryon but let girlfriend go first and be prepared just in case - my friend had to propose in JFK security rather than Venice when they pulled ring out to search - think they are better now.

I work for London firm and visit often so if other queries let me know - I can always ask colleagues

    Congratulations!
