I have sampled Vegemite in Australia and Marmite in the United Kigndom.

For me, I believe the preference goes to Vegemite. Marmite seems to be stronger in flavor and runnier in texture.

I simply spread Vegemite on a baguette whilst hiking in and exploring the Outback in Australia for a quick snack on the go.

    What is your preference?

Definitely Vegemite. On a good cracker/biscuit with a butter base coat. Creamy and Salty, tres bon. Now, I wouldn't eat a spoonful on its own.... but please feel free to try that.

British Marmite and Australian Vegemite are fairly similar. New Zealand Marmite OTOH is quite different and by far nicer

While we're on the subject - any opinions if Marmite is a liquid or a solid? Aside from the carry-on issue, trying to decide has caused my pre-coffee brain to hurt now and then ;-)

I like both, if I had to choose it would probably be vegemite.

It probably fits in the same category as peanut butter - Not a solid, not a liquid, not a gel but the TSA doesn't like it.

    Definitely marmite. Hmmm....marmite on toast!
Anyone tried the marmite rice cakes? Prefer them to those cereal bars.

Any idea where to purchase either one in continental Europe?

Also- was recently in London and even there it was surprising hard to find!

Vegemite! Love it on toast, but I also use it when making soup---a tablespoon will add some "oomph" to a pot of vegetable soup, especially if you use low or no-salt stock when making the soup.

(and if you're in the US--Cost Plus/World Market is a great place to pick up vegemite or marmite. And they do a quarerly (or so) newspaper coupon that often is "save 10 bucks when you buy 30"---a great time to stock up on either. In the DC area, Wegman's now carries both (maybe), but it's cheaper at Rodman's, if there is one near you)

Actually Promite gets my vote. Similar to Vegemite but a little milder, nice on buttered toast.

An an Australian, I would have to go with Vegemite

  14. Slight preference for Marmite over Vegemite. Probably cos I ate Marmite and not Vege when I was a kid.

Giving a hint as to how I voted I'm now looking forward to your favorite Cheez Whiz thread. [IMG] In fairness, probably a lot of people who grew up with marmite or vegemite find peanut butter, which I still enjoy, cloyingly sweet or otherwise unpalatable - à chacun son goût... [IMG]

Neither! I didn't grow up with it, and haven't managed to acquire a taste for it.
Mr. JetSet eats Vegemite but calls it Marmite - does that count? [IMG]

I prefer both ... in the dustbin.

  20. For global balance - Vegemite, on Scottish oatcakes (Nairn's), with smelly French cheese (epoisses would do fine) ...

Vegemite! My life's challenge is convincing/brainwashing my US-born son to love it as much as me.

I spent a year trying to like Vegemite in Australia and just couldn't do it.... its an acquired taste that I failed to acquire.

    That is easy to understand...
I do not appreciate either of those brown food items. [IMG]
